Hawassa University NURTURE project in collaboration with the Department of Information Systems organized a high-level seminar titled "Smart and Secure Digital Ethiopia: Innovation, Education and Data Governance for Sustainable Transformation," shedding light on the role of education, innovation, and policy in building a digitally empowered and secure nation, June 5, 2025.
NURTURE project is North-South-South partnership project funded by the Norwegian Government through NORHED II Program and implemented at five universities in Ethiopia including Hawassa University.
Dr. Tesfaye Bayu, Coordinator of NURTURE project at HU, emphasized the critical need for multi-sectoral engagement in shaping Ethiopia’s digital transformation. He noted that digital innovation must be inclusive, secure, and aligned with the country’s sustainable development goals.

Two speakers from Addis Ababa Science & Technology University (AASTU), Dr. Kula Kekeba and Dr. Yodit Gebrealif, delivered compelling presentations on “Data Privacy and Protection Issues in the Digital Transformation of Ethiopia” and “Smart Cities for Ethiopia: Bridging Gaps through Education, Innovation and Collaborative Governance", respectively.
The seminar that brought together academics, researchers, and stakeholders to discuss the pressing challenges and opportunities in Ethiopia’s digital future was concluded with an engaging Q&A session and a consensus on the need for continued dialogue and policy development to ensure Ethiopia’s digital future is both smart and secure.
