Hong Kong Gov’t and Hong Kong Police target the homeless when pro-democrats are silence.

On July 10th, 7 people representing homeless families protested for more assistance from the Hong Kong Gov’t. Instead of having conversation with officials, they were surrounded by 10 police and was warned not to threaten National Security.

The next day, July 11, Deputy Chief of Administration, Warner Check Wing-hing, proposed to empower officers from Food and Environmental Hygene Department to confiscate anything that takes up public spaces including personal belongings from the homeless.

Since National Security Law was established, most pro-democrats politicians were either silenced or arrested. The check and balance within the legislation has been vanished. Therefore, minorities in Hong Kong have has only become more helpless.

Nathan Law’s parents and brother was interrogated the day after Hong Kong Police announced a bounty for him and 7 others.

Many people questioned the effectiveness for the bounty since many cities have ended extradition with Hong Kong when National Security Law was passed. However, arresting Nathan Law’s relatives in Hong Kong surprised a lot of people.

Since Nathan Law has left Hong Kong to United Kingdom, he announced he has disconnected with his family and will not contact them in the future. However, this move has failed to keep his family safe.

Nathan Law is accused for the crime of inciting secession and colluding with foreign countries or foreign forces to endanger national security.

Legco gives DOJ more power to challenge NSL acquittals

Legislators have approved a change to the law giving prosecutors more opportunities to appeal against any future acquittals in national security trials. The Department of Justice will be able to go to the Court of Appeal to challenge acquittals made in cases heard in the High Court by a panel of judges.By a show of hands on Wednesday, lawmakers also supported changes to the Criminal Procedure Ordinance that will allow the prosecution to lodge a challenge if the judge in a High Court criminal trial with a jury rules that the defendant has no case to answer. DAB legislator Rock Chen stressed that no one is immune to making mistakes, not even judges, and the risks are too great when it comes to matters of security."If the prosecution lacks an avenue of appeal, it means defendants who endanger national security will be escaping the long arm of justice, and it means that we are not able to safeguard national security," Chen said. Stanley Ng from the Federation of Trade Unions said it is necessary to have extra safeguards when it comes to national security trials. "We are not saying that the judges deliberately acquit the defendants in such cases. It may be due to the lack of understanding of judges, or they may have a weak awareness of the importance of certain cases," Ng said. Secretary for Justice Paul Lam told Legco that prosecutors will not abuse their new appeal powers."The amendments will not affect the existing rights of the defendant, nor undermine the opportunity to a fair trial and presumption of innocence," he said.

Eighteen jailed over 2019 riot near PolyU

Eighteen people on Saturday were sentenced to between 36 and 57 months for rioting near Polytechnic University in 2019.One man was also convicted of possession of items with intent to destroy property, as he had been carrying petrol and a cloth.Handing down the sentences, District Court Judge Douglas Yau said the basis for the convictions was that the defendants had been present at the scene of the hours-long riot that took place in the Yau Ma Tei area - bolstering the rioters' momentum, and encouraging others to disturb social order. He described the scene as chaotic, saying debris, bottles filled with petrol, extendable batons, and hammers were left on the street. He said this fully reflected the large number of rioters, and the severity of the situation. Separately, one female defendant who was 17 at the time of the incident, will be sentenced on August 5, pending a training centre report. Police said 213 people have been arrested on charges of rioting during the unrest near Polytechnic University in 2019. It said at present 141 people have been convicted of rioting, with five sentenced to correctional facilities, 125 jailed for between 29 to 64 months, and 11 awaiting sentencing.
