There are all the secrets in the government that’s they aren’t gonna tell you; and don’t expect to be able to tell any secret either - it even hurts “national security”. Welcome #authoritarianism.

Albert Ho released on bail

The former chairman of the now-disbanded Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, Albert Ho, was on Monday granted bail after being remanded since May last year over a national security charge.Ho, 70, is accused of inciting subversion along with the alliance and two of its former leaders.High Court judge Johnny Chan ordered him to pay a HK$700,000 cash bail, as well as a surety from his daughter and sister-in-law. He is to report to the Wan Chai police station three times a week, and must not make any speeches that could be deemed as violating the national security law. Ho, who's also former chairman of the Democratic Party and a former lawmaker, applied for bail at the High Court after a West Kowloon magistrate rejected his application last month.

Mainland hands over another 'speedboat fugitive'

One of a group of 12 Hongkongers captured as they allegedly tried to flee Hong Kong by speedboat two years ago was on Monday handed over to the SAR authorities, after finishing a prison term on the mainland.Quinn Moon, wearing handcuffs and a black hood over her head, was seen being escorted to Tin Shui Wai Police Station. She was wanted by Hong Kong police in connection with an alleged bomb making case.Moon and 11 others were intercepted by the Guangdong coastguard on August 23, 2020 as they were allegedly trying to make their way to Taiwan. All of them were detained on the mainland for crossing the border illegally. The two youngest of them were brought back to Hong Kong at the end of 2020 and eight others returned in March last year after completing prison sentences.Moon was given a longer jail term for organising the illegal crossing along with Tang Kai-yin, who after being sentenced to three years behind bars is the only one of the group still being held on the mainland. The 12 faced protest-related charges in Hong Kong at the time of their alleged escape bid and some have been convicted and jailed again since their return. One of the group, Andy Li, has pleaded guilty to a national security offence in a case involving former media tycoon Jimmy Lai.

'Jimmy Lai to plead not guilty in security case'

The High Court heard on Monday that six former editors of the now-defunct Apple Daily intend to plead guilty to national security charges while the other defendants – the newspaper's founder, Jimmy Lai, and three corporations – indicated they would plead not guilty. This was revealed at a case management hearing before a panel of three judges.A reporting ban on the hearing was lifted by Justice Esther Toh.Prosecutor Anthony Chau told the court that the six former Apple Daily editors – Cheung Kim-hung, Ryan Law, Chan Pui-man, Yeung Ching-kee, Fung Wai-kong and Lam Man-chung – earlier indicated they would plead guilty to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The defendants are accused of calling on foreign countries or external forces to impose sanctions or blockages, or engage in hostile activities against Hong Kong and China, between July 1, 2020 and April 3, 2021. They are being remanded in custody. At the hearing on Monday, the parties tried to arrange for the trial to start as early as December but failed to reach agreement.Another hearing will be held to try to fix a trial date.Justice Toh stressed the highest priority is to handle the case expeditiously. The trial is expected to last 30 days.
