`"To Tithe or Not to Tithe"

The word tithe in Hebrew means tenth, in biblical times it was a tenth part of the harvest.

Why do churches still require tithe? Many pass around a tithe or offering bowl watching and waiting to see who will or will not tithe. While so many struggle financially, money is requested and sometimes required to be a church member. The churches often use Paul as the source to coerce their members to tithe. Referring back to 1 Timothy 6:17-19. But what and who was Paul actually referring to here?

Do we, our money, the food, and the things that we have, all belong to God? Of course, Psalm 24:1 tells us this. However, they are God's to do with how He directs us to do, not a church or Pastor. So let's see where many get the concept of tithing and what we are directed to do.

Exodus 23:19, and Leviticus 23:10 & 27:30, Numbers 18:12, Deuteronomy 14:22 are scriptures which many use to justify tithe. These scriptures are concerning the required feasts of the year which many churches do not keep, and then the Levitical requirement, which ended with the sacrifice of Jesus. Do these churches that require tithe also allow polygamy or the punishments that came with disobedience in Leviticus? For example, in Leviticus 20 where it states that anyone who dishonors their parents must be put to death? Of course not, neither do many keep the required feasts, or the true commandments of God. So why focus on tithe so much? 1 Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows". Churches depend on your money for their livelihood but is this what God still directs us to do?

God Truly does not need money or anything we have. However, when we sacrifice money, things, and time, we show Him our commitment and love to serve Him. In Matthew 19:16-24, Jesus told them to keep the commandments of God to have eternal life. Then Jesus was asked by a young man about what he lacked since he had been keeping the commandments. Jesus responded by saying, "If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven." The young man was sorrowful, and Jesus seeing this goes on to say that It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

When we look back into the old testament to Abraham, there is one instance where Abraham gave a tenth. It was from the spoils of war. If we look at Moses and Joshua, the tithe was directed toward the Israelites. It was a Levitical requirement for the 11 tribes of Israel to support the tribe of Levi who were the God-appointed priests. They were not given a land inheritance, Joshua 13:4. This is shown when Moses divided the promised land and then Joshua. The portion of tithe given had to do with the harvest of the fields and meat. This was so the Levite priests could eat and follow through with the required grain, meat, wine, and oil sacrifices and offerings. The Levite priests were busy daily, keeping up with the priestly requirements of those days. This included daily sacrifices for everyone who needed a sacrifice for their sins. Which involved praying, preparing, performing, and cleaning up. There was so much involved in being a priest before the sacrifice of Christ.

After Jesus was crucified, so much of that ended. We no longer needed the priests to perform sacrifices. Jesus was the perfect lamb, who was willingly sacrificed for all of our sins so that we could be forgiven and receive eternal life in heaven, ending the Levitical sacrificial requirement.
"To Tithe or Not to Tithe" (Continued)

So, did Jesus, whom we follow as our example, require or pay tithe? Jesus brings up tithe in Matthew 23:23, when He was speaking to the Pharisees who were under the Law. He was calling them hypocrites for focusing on tithe and not the law, justice, mercy, and faith. Then He brings up the widow's offering in Mark 12:41-44, where she gave all she had after the rich gave from their abundance. Did Jesus tell His disciples to get paid to give the gospel? No, read what Jesus said to His disciples in Luke 9:1-6.

Did John the Baptist require tithe? No, John did not. As we see, he lived off of the land spreading the gospel for free, Matthew 3:4.

Did Paul get paid or require tithe? Paul was a tent maker. Yes, Paul held down a job while he traveled and built the church. That is not to say that he or anyone else did not receive help or donations at some point but he did not require tithe. When Paul said to give generously, he was not talking about giving tithe regularly, especially when you don't have it. He was talking about a situation with the church people of Macedonia who were being tested and were poor. Paul called, not commanded, to give to them freely and generously, refer 2 Corinthians 8.

So, again, why are the churches requiring tithe? Sure it takes time to write up sermons, present them, baptize people, meet up to counsel, do eulogies, and weddings. etc. But is spreading the gospel a reason to get paid? Shouldn't all God-fearing Christ followers serve in this capacity? Are we not all called to disciple, sticking strictly with the Laws of God, being just, while showing mercy and grace, and teaching all to have faith in God through Jesus? Why, if we are to disciple, are we not putting together groups, who choose to do this freely, to spread the gospel, to serve the Lord God through Jesus? Why, instead are we paying someone or a group who, in many cases, is dictated and corrupted by those who give in the most tithe ultimately leading the sheep astray?

The reality is that many of us donate so much time ourselves to research, prepare, and work to spread the gospel. Whether you are the musician up front, writing studies, the Sabbath school teacher, those cooking to provide food, cleaning, elders, witnessing, groundskeepers, or maintenance workers, etc. Why? Because we truly love God through Jesus with all of our hearts. We are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. therefore all things will work together for the good to them that love God.

It is understandable if we are paying to have a place to fellowship and I'm not saying it is bad to tithe or give donations but for a church or pastor to expect payment to serve God is not biblical.

Why are many pastors and churches so monetarily rich? Is this what God intended? I, myself, have known so many pastors in my life and I truly can tell you that not all are appointed by God. I've know some who live off of the backs of the people with no problem, gaining riches from the church. I've also know some who live so modestly, humbly, and simply, sacrificing every bit of their time along with the support and help of their families to serve God with great joy.

Were Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Jesus, Paul, or any of the disciples wealthy from tithe? No. Those who had wealth worked for it with their flocks and land. They all served God freely.

How sickening it is to see churches justify payment to receive grace from God, living off of the backs of their members, expecting payment to spread the gospel. Again, we are ALL called to discipleship, to serve God through Jesus. And I will say, that many churches lack the disciples needed to run a church. However, it should not be burdensome for anyone to receive the gospel. On the contrary, we are called to care for the poor, widows, and children.

Again, I'm not saying that it is bad to tithe willingly or donate freely but no one should feel threatened to lose their opportunity to hear the gospel or be scared into it because they do not tithe or tithe too little. 🙏🏽

Hebrews 7:4-10
or this Melchiz′edek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him; and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, and has neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest for ever. See how great he is! Abraham the patriarch gave him a tithe of the spoils. And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brethren, though these also are descended from Abraham. But this man who has not their genealogy received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. Here tithes are received by mortal men; there, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchiz′edek met him.

Malachi 3:10
Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.

Joshua 13:14
To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance; the offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

Matthew 3:4
And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and leather girdle about his loins, and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Matthew 23:23
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

Mark 12:41-44
And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living.”

Luke 9:1-6
And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

James 1:27
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

1 Thessalonians 2:9
For you remember our labor and toil, brethren; we worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you, while we preached to you the gospel of God.

Timothy 6:17-19
As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches but on God who richly furnishes us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good deeds, liberal and generous, thus laying up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life which is life indeed.
Exodus 23:19
The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

Leviticus 23:10
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:

Leviticus 27:30
And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord.

Numbers 18:12
All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the Lord, them have I given thee.

Deuteronomy 14:22
Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

2 Chronicles 31:5
And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly.

Proverbs 3:9-10
Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

1 Corinthians 9:6
Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living?

1 Corinthians 9:11-12
If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

1 Corinthians 9:18
What then is my reward? Just this: that in my preaching I may make the gospel free of charge, not making full use of my right in the gospel.

2 Corinthians 11:7
Did I commit a sin in abasing myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached God’s gospel without cost to you?
2 Corinthians 8

1 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;

2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

3 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;

4 Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

5 And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

6 Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

8 I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.

9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

10 And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.

11 Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.

12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

13 For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened:

14 But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:

15 As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.

16 But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.

17 For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.

18 And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches;

19 And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:

20 Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us:

21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

22 And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.

23 Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

24 Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.

The Messages of the Three Angels

Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.

And he said with a loud voice, "Fear God and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come, and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water."

Another angel, a second, followed, saying, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality."

And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of His anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name."

Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

And I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.""Blessed indeed," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!"
