“Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Choices and Consequences

Genesis 3:1-7

In 1890, amateur ornithologist Eugene Schieffelin decided to release sixty European starlings into New York City’s Central Park. While there were likely several introductions of the species, Schieffelin’s released starlings resulted in the first successful, documented nesting. Now there are roughly eighty-five million of the birds flapping across the continent. Unfortunately, starlings are invasive, pushing out native bird populations, spreading disease to cattle, and causing an estimated $800 million annually in damage. Schieffelin couldn’t have imagined the damage his choice would cause.

Choices can have massive consequences. Though warned, Adam and Eve couldn’t have envisioned the disastrous ramifications of their choice on all creation. God had told them they were “free to eat from any tree in the garden” (Genesis 2:16), save one, the tree in “the middle of the garden” (3:3). But deceived by that wily serpent, “[Eve] took some and ate it” (v. 6). Then Adam followed, also choosing to eat the fruit God forbade. So much destruction, heartbreak, and ruin because of one choice.

Every time we ignore God’s wisdom and choose another path, we invite calamity. It may seem that our choice is insignificant or only affects us; however, our narrow understanding or fleeting desires can easily lead us into a world of trouble. Choosing God’s way, though, leads us to life and flourishing.

Reflect & Pray

What choice has proved disastrous for you? How can you make wiser decisions?

Dear God, please help me make wise decisions. 🙏

“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.”

James 3 - Questions & Answers

Q: My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive what?
A: The greater condemnation.

Q: For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle what?
A: The whole body.

Q: Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may do what to us?
A: Obey.

Q: And we turn about their what?
A: Whole body.

Q: If a man can bridle his tongue or control his whole body, what would he be?
A: Perfect.

Q: Although ships are so great, and driven by fierce winds, it only takes a very small helm to turn it around. The tongue although small boasts what?
A: Great things.

Q: Behold, how great a matter a little fire what?
A: Kindelth.

Q: The tongue is a fire, a world of what?
A: Iniquity (sin).

Q: What defileth the whole body and setteth fire the course of nature and is set on hell fire?
A: The tongue.

Q: What can no man tame that is unruly evil and full of deadly poison?
A: The tongue.

Q: Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the what?
A: Similitude (similarly) of God.

Q: Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things what?
A: Ought not so to be.

Q: Can a fountain yield both salt and fresh water? Yes or No,
A: No.

Q: Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of what?
A: Wisdom.

Q: But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the what?
A: Truth.

Q: This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is what?
A: Earthly, sensual, devilish.

Q: For where envying and strife is, there is what?
A: Confusion and every evil work.

Q: But the wisdom that is from above is first what?
A: Pure.

Q Then the wisdom that is from above is?
A: Peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Q: And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that do what?
A: Make peace.
James 3 warns that teachers will be judged more strictly and stresses the great power of the tongue. Though small, the tongue can guide a person’s life for good or cause great destruction, and it should not both bless God and curse people made in His image. James then contrasts earthly wisdom, which comes from jealousy and selfish ambition, with wisdom from God, which is pure, peaceful, gentle, merciful, and produces righteousness.
James 4 - Questions

Q: Where do the wars and fighting among you come from?

Q: Ye lust, and have what?

Q: Ye kill, and desire to have and what?

Q: Ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask what?

Q: Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask what?

Q: That ye may consume it upon your what?

Q: A friend of the world is an enemy to who?

Q: Does scripture speak in vain? Yes or No.

Q: The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to what?

Q: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the who?

Q: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will what?

Q: Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to who?

Q: As sinners, we are to cleanse our hands, and purify what?

Q: As sinners, we are called to be afflicted, mourn, and weep: letting our laughter be turned to mourning, and joy to what?

Q; Not embracing the sin but recognizing it as what?

Q: We are to humble ourselves in the sight of who?

Q: As a result, He shall what?

Q: Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a what?

Q: How many lawgivers are there, who can save and destroy?

Q: Knowing that tomorrow may do what?

Q: Rejoicing in our boasting is what?

Q: How should we live?

Q: Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is what?
James 4

1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
