"For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it."

โ€œThe face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of
them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them
out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart;
and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.โ€

The Touch of the Masterโ€™s Hand

โ€˜Twas battered and scarred and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But he held it up with a smile.

โ€œWhat am I bid, good folk?โ€ he cried.
โ€œWhoโ€™ll start the bidding for me?
A dollar, a dollar ... now two ... only two ...
Two dollars, and whoโ€™ll make it three?

โ€œThree dollars once, three dollars twice,
Going for threeโ€ ... but no!
From the room far back a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow.

Then wiping the dust from the old violin
And tightening up the strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet,
As sweet as an angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said, โ€œWhat am I bid for the old violin?โ€
As he held it up with the bow.

โ€œA thousand dollars ... and whoโ€™ll make it two?
Two...two thousand, and whoโ€™ll make it three?
Three thousand once and three thousand twice ...
Three thousand and gone!โ€ said he.

The people cheered, but some exclaimed
โ€œWe do not quite understand ...
What changed itโ€™s worth?โ€ and the answer came:
โ€œTwas the touch of the masterโ€™s hand.โ€

And many a man with soul out of tune
And battered and scarred by sin
Is auctioned cheap by the thoughtless crowd
Just like the old violin.

But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul, and the change that is wrought
By the touch of the Masterโ€™s hand.

O Master! I am the tuneless one
Lay, lay Thy hand on me,
Transform me now, put a song in my heart
Of melody, Lord, to Thee!

โ€œMy brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.โ€

Victory over Death

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57

The Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose, California, is generally regarded as one of the oldest cemeteries in the state. Though, of course, people had died and been buried throughout our stateโ€™s history, the dead were often buried on family land or somewhere near where their lives ended. But in 1839, a decision was made to bury people under the oak trees that lined the San Bautista Hills. First known as โ€œThe Graveyard,โ€ the cemetery expanded over the years, and in 1933 it was renamed Oak Hill Memorial Park in tribute to the history of the site.

Ever since sin entered into the world, death has been an unescapable part of the human experience. Unless the Lord returns, every one of us will one day keep that appointment. โ€œAnd as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgmentโ€ (Hebrews 9:27). This is just as true for Christians as it is for unbelievers, but we face death with a different perspective, because we realize that it no longer holds the sting that it once did. Our lives will come to an end, but the victorious life and resurrection of Jesus Christ ensures that we too will live again.

When He met with the grieving Martha after the death of His friend Lazarus, Jesus declared that He is our hope for victory over the grave. โ€œJesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he liveโ€ (John 11:25). This is the promise that allows us to go to a cemetery with confident hope.

Today's Growth Principle

The enemy the world fears mostโ€”deathโ€”has already been defeated by our Savior.
