“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,”

Luke 18 emphasizes persistent faith, humility, and the nature of God’s Kingdom. Jesus begins with a parable about a widow and an unjust judge, teaching the importance of persistent prayer and not losing heart. He shows that if even an unjust judge can grant justice, how much more will God respond to His elect who cry out day and night?

Next, Jesus contrasts a proud Pharisee and a humble tax collector in prayer. The Pharisee boasts of his deeds, while the tax collector beats his chest, asking for mercy. Jesus affirms the humble one is justified, highlighting the Greek theme: “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled”.

Jesus then blesses little children, teaching that the Kingdom of God belongs to those who receive it like a child. This childlike trust is key to entering the Kingdom.

A rich ruler asks how to inherit eternal life. Though he claims to follow the commandments, Jesus tells him to sell all he has and follow Him. The man departs sorrowfully, revealing the truth that it is difficult for the rich to enter the Kingdom.

Jesus again predicts His suffering, death, and resurrection, but the disciples do not understand, the meaning is hidden.

The chapter ends with Jesus healing a blind man near Jericho. The man calls Jesus “Son of David”, and his faith makes him well. It highlights perseverance in prayer, humility, reliance on God, and the need for faith to enter His Kingdom.

The concept of Hell

The concept of Hell as a place of eternal fiery torment is not clearly found in the original biblical languages; Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic. This idea developed later through church tradition and theology.

In the original texts:
Sheol (Hebrew) and Hades (Greek) refer to the grave or the realm of the dead, where both the righteous and unrighteous went. Psalm 6:5, “In death there is no remembrance of thee: in Sheol who shall give thee thanks?”
Luke 16:23 , “And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment...” Revelation 20:14 says Hades is temporary and will be destroyed.

Gehenna (Greek) or Gehinnam (Aramaic) refers to the Valley of Hinnom, a site once used for child sacrifice and later for burning waste. Jesus used Gehenna as a symbol of divine judgment and destruction, not eternal torment. Matthew 10:28, “Fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.”

Neither Sheol/Hades nor Gehenna describe a place of eternal conscious torment in the original languages. The modern concept of "Hell" is largely a later theological construct, shaped by tradition, interpretations, and extra-biblical sources, not by a single word or clear teaching from the original Scriptures.
