In Matthew 14, Herod the tetrarch heard of Jesus’ fame and believed He was John the Baptist raised from the dead. Herod had imprisoned John for speaking against his unlawful marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife. Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the people who saw John as a prophet. On Herod’s birthday, Herodias' daughter danced and pleased him so much that he promised her anything. At her mother’s urging, she asked for John’s head. Though sorry, Herod fulfilled the request, and John was beheaded. His disciples buried him and told Jesus.
When Jesus heard, He withdrew by boat to a quiet place. However, large crowds followed Him, and He had compassion on them, healing the sick. As evening came, the disciples urged Jesus to send the people away to find food. Instead, Jesus fed over five thousand people with just five loaves and two fish.
