โ€œThese things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.โ€

Preparing the way for our hope.

Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane after being betrayed by Judas, one of His disciples. Before this, Jesus had been praying with sorrow in His heart, asking God if the suffering ahead could pass from Him, but He accepted Godโ€™s will. When Judas arrived, he greeted Jesus with a kiss, and soldiers came to take Jesus away. Although Simon Peter tried to defend Him with a sword, Jesus stopped him and allowed Himself to be arrested.

Jesus was brought before the Jewish leaders and the high priest. They accused Him of false things and mocked Him. Peter, one of His closest disciples, denied knowing Jesus three times, just as Jesus had said he would.

The next morning, Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate found no fault in Jesus but gave in to the crowdโ€™s demands. The people chose to release a criminal named Barabbas and asked for Jesus to be crucified. Jesus was beaten, given a crown of thorns, and mocked as โ€œKing of the Jews.โ€ Then He was led to a place called Golgotha, meaning "Place of the Skull."

At Golgotha, Jesus was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While suffering, He spoke words of love and forgiveness. He promised one of the thieves that he would be with Him in paradise. He also cried out to God, saying, โ€œMy God, My God, why have you forsaken me?โ€ After several hours, Jesus gave a loud cry and died. At that moment, the temple curtain tore in two, the earth shook, and many people were afraid.

A Roman soldier who saw everything said, โ€œTruly, this was the Son of God.โ€ Later, a man named Joseph of Arimathea took Jesusโ€™ body, wrapped it in cloth, and laid it in a new tomb. A large stone was rolled in front of the entrance, and guards were placed there.

Even though this was a time of great sadness, it prepared the way for the joy of Jesusโ€™ resurrection.

This is the most meaningful time in history for all who follow Christ and honor God. As we remember Holy Week, we reflect on the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. These events are the foundation of our faith.

It's important to remember that the modern celebration of Easter with its eggs and bunnies, comes from ancient traditions related to Ishtar, a fertility goddess. These symbols and customs were later adopted by pagan cultures and do not represent the true meaning of Christโ€™s sacrifice.

Instead of following man-made traditions, let us return to what Scripture teaches. God's people were commanded to remember the Passover in Exodus 12, and the New Testament gives a clear account of Jesus' death (the true Passover Lamb of God) and His resurrection in Matthew 26โ€“27, Mark 14โ€“15, Luke 22โ€“23, and John 19โ€“20.

In this sacred time, let us honor the one true God and the Lamb who was slain for our sins. As so many come together this weekend, may we remember with reverence the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Matthew 27:62-66
Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
