Matthew 5
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Matthew 5 (Continued)
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Fatherโs kingdom.

Matthew chapter 5 is the beginning of Jesusโ famous Sermon on the Mount. When Jesus saw the crowds of people following Him, He went up to a mountain, sat down, and began to teach His disciples. This chapter is filled with powerful lessons about how to live a life that pleases God.
Jesus started by sharing a series of blessings called the Beatitudes. He said, โBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.โ This means that people who are humble and know they need God will be part of His kingdom. He also said that those who mourn will be comforted, showing us that God cares deeply for those who are hurting.
He spoke about the meek, which means people who are gentle, patient, and humble. Jesus promised that the meek will inherit the earth. Then He said that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, those who truly want to do what is right by God, will be filled. Those who are pure in heart are also blessed, because they will see God.
Jesus called peacemakers the children of God, because they help bring peace instead of trouble. He also said that those who are persecuted for doing right by God are blessed, and that the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. He encouraged His followers not to be afraid if people insult or lie about them because of their faith in God. Instead, they should be happy, because their reward in heaven will be great.
Jesus told His followers to let their light shine before others. By doing good works, people will see and give glory to God in heaven. He also made it clear that He did not come to destroy the law or the prophets, but to fulfill them. Every part of Godโs law is important. He said that anyone who breaks even the smallest commandment and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But those who follow and teach Godโs commandments will be called great.
Jesus warned that unless our righteousness is greater than that of the scribes and Pharisees, we will not enter the kingdom of heaven. He explained that sin is not just about actions. For example, if a person looks at someone with lust, they have already committed adultery in their heart. He also said that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual sin, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman also commits adultery.
Jesus taught that we should not swear at all, not by heaven, earth, or anything else. Instead, we should simply say โyesโ or โno.โ Anything more than that comes from evil.
He told us to be generous and kind. If someone asks something from us, we should give. And if someone wants to borrow, we should not turn away. Most importantly, Jesus taught that we must love our enemies. He said we should bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us, and pray for those who mistreat and persecute us. By doing this, we show that we are children of our Father in heaven.
Finally, Jesus gave us a goal to strive for: โBe perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.โ This means we should aim to live a life full of love, mercy, and righteousness, just like God.

Preparing the way for our hope.
Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane after being betrayed by Judas, one of His disciples. Before this, Jesus had been praying with sorrow in His heart, asking God if the suffering ahead could pass from Him, but He accepted Godโs will. When Judas arrived, he greeted Jesus with a kiss, and soldiers came to take Jesus away. Although Simon Peter tried to defend Him with a sword, Jesus stopped him and allowed Himself to be arrested.
Jesus was brought before the Jewish leaders and the high priest. They accused Him of false things and mocked Him. Peter, one of His closest disciples, denied knowing Jesus three times, just as Jesus had said he would.
The next morning, Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate found no fault in Jesus but gave in to the crowdโs demands. The people chose to release a criminal named Barabbas and asked for Jesus to be crucified. Jesus was beaten, given a crown of thorns, and mocked as โKing of the Jews.โ Then He was led to a place called Golgotha, meaning "Place of the Skull."
At Golgotha, Jesus was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While suffering, He spoke words of love and forgiveness. He promised one of the thieves that he would be with Him in paradise. He also cried out to God, saying, โMy God, My God, why have you forsaken me?โ After several hours, Jesus gave a loud cry and died. At that moment, the temple curtain tore in two, the earth shook, and many people were afraid.
A Roman soldier who saw everything said, โTruly, this was the Son of God.โ Later, a man named Joseph of Arimathea took Jesusโ body, wrapped it in cloth, and laid it in a new tomb. A large stone was rolled in front of the entrance, and guards were placed there.
Even though this was a time of great sadness, it prepared the way for the joy of Jesusโ resurrection.

This is the most meaningful time in history for all who follow Christ and honor God. As we remember Holy Week, we reflect on the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. These events are the foundation of our faith.
It's important to remember that the modern celebration of Easter with its eggs and bunnies, comes from ancient traditions related to Ishtar, a fertility goddess. These symbols and customs were later adopted by pagan cultures and do not represent the true meaning of Christโs sacrifice.
Instead of following man-made traditions, let us return to what Scripture teaches. God's people were commanded to remember the Passover in Exodus 12, and the New Testament gives a clear account of Jesus' death (the true Passover Lamb of God) and His resurrection in Matthew 26โ27, Mark 14โ15, Luke 22โ23, and John 19โ20.
In this sacred time, let us honor the one true God and the Lamb who was slain for our sins. As so many come together this weekend, may we remember with reverence the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
