Matthew 4

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;

13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:

14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
In Matthew chapter 4, we learn about Jesus being tested in the beginning of His public ministry. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, a quiet and lonely place, where He stayed for forty days and nights. During this time, Jesus fasted, meaning He did not eat any food. At the end of the forty days, He was very hungry.

Then the devil, also known as the tempter, came to test Jesus. The first thing the devil said was, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” He wanted Jesus to prove His power. Even though the devil already knew who Jesus was, he tried to make Jesus doubt it. But Jesus replied with scripture, saying, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Next, the devil took Jesus to the holy city of Jerusalem and placed Him on the highest part of the temple. He challenged Jesus again, saying, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down,” and quoted the scripture about angels protecting Him. But Jesus answered, “You shall not tempt the Lord your God.”

Then the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their greatness. The devil said he would give all these things to Jesus if He would bow down and worship the devil. Jesus strongly refused and said, “Get away from me, satan! For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.” After this, the devil left, and angels came to take care of Jesus.

Afterward, when Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been put in prison, He went to Galilee. He left His hometown of Nazareth and moved to Capernaum, a town near the sea. This move fulfilled a prophecy spoken by Isaiah, saying that a light would come to the people living in darkness.

From that time, Jesus began to preach to the people. His message was simple and powerful: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

As Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two fishermen, Simon Peter and his brother Andrew casting their net into the sea. Jesus called out to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Then Jesus saw two more brothers, James and John, working in a boat with their father. He called them too, and they also left everything to follow Him.

Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in synagogues, preaching the good news about God’s kingdom, and healing every kind of sickness and disease. His fame spread all over Syria, and people brought Him those who were sick, in pain, possessed by demons, suffering mentally, or paralyzed and Jesus healed them all.

Because of this, large crowds began to follow Him from many places: Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan River.

Sadly, this is the direction our culture is heading even among some extreme Christians who believe that men are more superior than women. This belief comes from a wrong understanding and misuse of Scripture. It teaches men that women have less value, which is simply not true. In fact, putting others down with words can be just as harmful or even worse than physical abuse. I’ve seen this kind of behavior and heard this thinking, and it’s dangerous. Women acting like a mouse, carefully stepping around their husbands as if they are scared to speak, with men thinking they are kings. It does not honor God. We have One True King and it's no man, or woman for that matter!

The Bible shows us that God values women greatly. For example, Deborah was a strong leader and prophet, chosen by God, even in a time when men usually led. Many churches focus on Paul and his letters, but they often leave out that Priscilla, along with her husband Aquila, taught alongside Paul. She was a teacher and prophet, and she wasn’t treated as less than, she was respected and used by God just the same.

God has given both men and women meaningful and valuable roles. When we walk together in unity, we reflect His perfect design. In marriage, God joins a man and woman as one, not as separate individuals, but as a united whole. This sacred union mirrors our relationship with Christ, who calls the Church His bride.

Praise God for those who truly understand this, those who serve one another with love, humility, and truth, not with control or fear. And above all, we give thanks to God for the greatest example of love: His Son, Jesus Christ.

But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

Luke 6:35-36
