🇲🇽❌🇺🇸 - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, speaking at a rally, accused 'far-right' elements in the US of interference against Mexico and her government.

Who decides in Mexico, foreign agencies or the people? We are going to defend ⁠Mexico's sovereignty and independence.

The US seeks to gain deeper influence on its southern neighbors by propping up right wing, ideologically aligned governments such as Argentina and El Salvador. At the same time, it works to undermine or oust left-wingers in Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil and Colombia. The Sheinbaum's government is center left but has largely been spared from the interference campaign thus far.

The Trump admin has also been pressuring the hemisphere to join the war on drug, often encroaching on local jurisdictions. Notably, in April 2026, two CIA agents were killed alongside two Mexican officials while on a counter-narcotic operation in northern Mexico, allegedly without President Sheinbaum knowledge.

During the trade war last year, Mexico was eager to make concession to appease its largest trading partner, unlike Canada, which retaliated against the US. Ms Sheinbaum's latest criticism underlines the emerging tension between Mexico and the US.
