The House claims the symbol poses a "direct threat to Jews and supporters of Israel." Opposition parties, including the Greens, Left, and AfD, did not support the motion. Critics argue the symbol has historical significance and is used by various groups at risk of criminalization.

Recently, Germany has shown strong support for Israel. The parliament passed a bill requiring naturalization applicants to affirm Israel's right to exist, and the government banned British-Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu-Sitta from entering Germany. Additionally, the AfD has proposed classifying postcolonial studies as antisemitic.
