The crewmembers served with the "401st (Iron Tracks)" Armored Brigade’s "52nd" Battalion, under the "162nd (Ha-Plada)" Division.

The IDF has stated that an AlQassam Brigades unit of 4 soldiers attacked an IDF outpost site within "Kafr Jabalia" at 6 am. One of the AlQassam Brigades personnel approached the tank, opened rifle fire on the head of the tank commander peeking outside the commander hatch, and then lodged an IED into the hatch, destroying the tank catastrophically and killing all crewmembers.

A soldier of the "933rd (Nahal)" Brigades "50th (Bazelet)" Battalion was also wounded during the event, likely during a fire fight.
