This is the English-language recording of the launch event for the Certificate peer learning programme on Psychological First Aid (PFA) in support of children affected by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Learn more & apply https://www.learning.foundation/ukraine

The event was hosted by The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF) in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Most of this peer learning event was dedicated to listening and learning from the experiences of participants.

Who is participating?

Organizers selected 371 participants out of 873 applicants, with 216 in the Anglophone cohort spanning 25 countries and 155 in the Ukrainian-language group representing 14 nations.

86% are women in the Ukrainian-language cohort, 85% in the Anglophone group

Participants support a range of affected children, including those recently displaced internationally, those displaced more than a year ago, children in conflict zones, those displaced internally within Ukraine, and children separated from parents.

Participants work in mental health and other health care roles, as well as in education, social work, and humanitarian aid

Common challenges include stigma around mental health, limited resources, evolving needs, and gaps in referral systems.

Key support needs included helping children deal with painful experiences, creating a sense of safety, encouraging hopefulness, comforting distressed children, non-judgmental listening, and recognizing signs of upset.

Who are the partners?

Pӓnu Saaristo, IFRC’s regional manager for health and care, emphasized the crucial need for the programme given the scale and duration of the crisis.

He noted the importance of empowering professionals across sectors to provide frontline psychosocial support, stressing that no single agency could meet the enormous needs alone.

Judit Németh-Almasi from Terre des hommes, whose organization is hosting an e-learning module developed by The Geneva Learning Foundation with IFRC, shared her organization’s long experience in supporting children on the move.

She expressed hope that the peer learning approach could surface insights to inform future programming for the longer-term wellbeing and resilience of affected children.

Joshua Lee, Technical Advisor at the IFRC Psychosocial Centre, underscored that while PFA is not a solution for all needs, it remains a critical first-line response to help children feel safe, connected and hopeful after a crisis.

He framed the initiative as a starting point for ongoing shared learning to guide efforts for Ukraine’s children over the difficult road ahead.

What is unique about the learning methodology?

The Launch Event provided an overview of the unique peer learning process that participants would engage in over the coming weeks.

Learners will develop case studies based on their own experiences, provide structured feedback on each other’s projects, and progressively refine their approach to applying PFA with children.

While participation is largely asynchronous to accommodate learners’ schedules, the organizers have scheduled several live touchpoint sessions for participants to connect with each other and expert contributors.

The facilitation team encouraged participants to openly share their own challenges and learn from others’ experiences, while upholding core principles of confidentiality, child safeguarding, and “do no harm.”

What happens now?

The Launch event closed with an overview of upcoming milestones for the first intensive Anglophone and Ukrainian learning cycles.

Organizers encouraged participants to complete a short foundational e-learning module if new to Psychological First Aid (PFA), and to begin reflecting on the case study they would develop.

The Collaborative is a peer learning initiative to support immunization professionals across Nigeria in ensuring every child receives needed vaccines.

As of July 8th, the Collaborative's campaign has reached 56,195 health leaders across Nigeria, with 1,615 expressing interest in joining.

73 Nigerian health leaders have contributed to disseminating information about the Collaborative to colleagues.

Applications have been received from all 36 states and 171 local government areas.

Today, health professionals from across Nigeria were announced and welcomed as the newest members of the Collaborative.

The top challenges they aim to address include reaching zero-dose children and missed communities, addressing missed vaccinations in children and adults, and overcoming disruptions to routine immunization.

Members of the Collaborative will support each other, accompanied by Guides on the side, to identify root causes and corrective actions for immunization challenges in their local areas.

The Collaborative provides an opportunity for immunization professionals to learn from each other's experience across the country.

With millions of children in Nigeria missing out on critical vaccinations each year, the Collaborative aims to empower and connect health workers on the front lines to ensure no child is left unprotected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

New members will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis.

7 Insights from Nigeria’s first Immunization Collaborative peer learning exercise

On August 6, 2024, the Nigeria Immunization Agenda 2030 Collaborative concluded its first peer learning exercise with a final Assembly.

This groundbreaking initiative, a partnership between The Geneva Learning Foundation, Nigeria’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), and UNICEF, has already engaged over 4,400 health workers from all 36 States and more than 300 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across Nigeria.

The Collaborative’s innovative approach focuses on empowering health workers to identify root causes of local immunization challenges and develop practical, context-specific solutions.

As the initiative continues to grow, with new members joining daily, it represents a significant shift in how Nigeria approaches immunization capacity building and problem-solving.

Following the final Assembly, Nigeria immunization specialist Jenny Sequeira and The Geneva Learning Foundation’s deputy director Charlotte Mbuh shared their reflections on the exercise.

Their insights offer a window into the transformative potential of this peer learning model.

Here are 7 key takeaways from their discussion, highlighting the impact and future potential of the Nigeria Immunization Agenda 2030 Collaborative:

1. Critical Thinking Evolution: Participants made significant progress in their analytical skills, moving from vague problem statements to nuanced understanding of local immunization challenges. The “5 Whys” technique proved particularly effective.

2. Power of Peer Review: The structured, time-bound peer review process emerged as a practical learning tool, fostering self-reflection and exposing participants to diverse perspectives.

3. Leveling the Playing Field: The Collaborative created an environment where hierarchies dissolved, enabling workers from the local levels to engage laterally with state and national-level participants.

4. Focus on Actionable Solutions: Participants were encouraged to identify root causes within their control, promoting practical, context-specific solutions.

5. Importance of Community Engagement: The process highlighted the crucial role of engaging communities and addressing barriers to improve vaccine uptake.

6. Emphasis on Implementation: While the RCA exercise was valuable, leaders stressed the critical need for follow-through and implementation of proposed solutions.

7. Cross-Sector Collaboration: The collaborative saw participation from diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and private sector entities.
