Teach to Reach 9: Get ready to learn about measles outbreaks, HPV vaccination, climate change, and neglected needs of women’s health

Follow this link to learn more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGh71Sfr5M8

On Friday, with seven days to go until Teach to Reach 9 on October 13, 2023, meet health leaders who will be at Teach to Reach and discover what we are learning ahead of the event, on questions such as:
- How to respond to measles outbreaks?
- How to successfully vaccinate against HPV (human papillomavirus)?
- How to identify and reach zero-dose children in urban and peri-urban areas (with UNICEF)

“Learning happens best when people seek answers to their specific daily challenges. Teach to Reach is proof that immunization professionals are hungry to learn, and hungry to share.” – Dr Kate O’Brien (WHO) and Ephrem T Lemango (UNICEF)

This edition of Teach to Reach isn’t just about vaccination. Find out how health professionals:
- dealing with the health effects of climate change in local communities
- take action against Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS), a neglected tropical disease that affects around 56 million women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Uniquely, the Geneva Learning Foundation’s platform and its Teach to Reach events provide a way to link [health professionals] together, so that they can share experiences about what works and equally important, what doesn’t work, while learning from each other.” – Ephrem T Lemango, Associate Director of Immunization, UNICEF

For health professionals, Teach to Reach offers a unique opportunity to:
1. Share experience with colleagues from all over the world
2. Get help with your toughest challenge
3. Get fresh ideas to help you succeed

Since January 2021, successive editions of Teach to Reach have connected 64,705 participants in one-to-one networking sessions and group sessions to share experience.

“While we can provide tools and guidance, we need to do more to empower immunization professionals to identify and solve their own problems, wherever they are working, and whatever those problems are.” – Dr Kate O’Brien, Director of the Department for Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals (IVB), World Health Organization (WHO)

Global health leader Orin Levine will be a Guide on the Side at Teach to Reach 9

Request your invitation https://www.learning.foundation/teachtoreach

The Geneva Learning Foundation is delighted to announce global health leader Dr. Orin Levine will serve as a Guide on the Side for the ninth edition of Teach to Reach: Connect.

Teach to Reach is an ongoing peer learning event enabling community-based health professionals worldwide to meet, network and learn from fellow health workers across borders.

Teach to Reach convenes a diverse global community of local health workers, many working under difficult circumstances including armed conflict, disasters, and other challenges.

Friday’s edition is reaching almost 18,000 health workers, primarily those working for government in districts and facilities in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

As a Guide on the Side, Dr. Levine will listen and share his own experience and insights.

“Joining the Teach to Reach community is like a chance to get a giant serving of education from the front lines of immunization,” said Dr. Levine.

“Stories together with evidence can really influence and change the way people take action and solve problems.”

His global health expertise will help contextualize the success stories, lessons learned, and challenges shared by participants about their daily work.

Sessions feature practitioners sharing experiences and problem-solving together, with Guides on the side like Dr. Levine coming from national and international partners.

Other Teach to Reach 9 Guides on the Side include Lora Shimp (JSI Immunization Center); Eleonore Antoinette Ba-Nguz, Ibrahim Dadari, Charles Kakaire, and Deepa Pokharel from UNICEF; Alan Brooks and Julie Jacobson from Bridges to Development; and François Gasse, a globally-recognized leader in the elimination of neonatal tetanus.

This edition will focus on critical immunization topics that matter for immunization, such as measles outbreak response and cervical cancer prevention (HPV vaccination).

In partnership with Gavi’s Zero-Dose Learning Hub and UNICEF, Teach to Reach 9 participants will share experiences of how to successfully identify and reach zero-dose children and underimmunized communities.

Other topics on the agenda include the effects of climate change on the health of local communities and neglected needs of women’s health.

“If health workers do not share their challenges and solutions, we are bound to fail.”

Most significant learning that contributes to improved performance takes place outside of formal training.

It occurs through informal and incidental forms of learning between peers.

Effective use of peer learning requires realizing how much we can learn from each other (peer learning), experiencing the power of defying distance to solve problems together (remote learning), and feeling a growing sense of belonging to a community (social learning), emergent across country borders and health system levels (networked learning).

At the ASTMH annual meeting Symposium organized by Julie Jacobson, two TGLF Alumnae, María Monzón from Argentina and Ruth Allotey from Ghana, will be sharing their analyses and reflections of how they turned peer learning into action, results, and impact.

In his presentation, Reda Sadki, president of The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF), will explore:

1. What do we need to understand about digital learning?

2. Networked learning: rethinking learning architecture in the Digital Age

3. Social learning: peer learning is about making human connections

4. Practical examples of TGLF peer learning systems for WHO, Wellcome, UNICEF, and Bridges to Development that connect learning to change, results, and impact.

6. Emergent peer learning systems driven by local practitioner and community needs and priorities.

How do you identify and reach zero-dose children and underimmunised communities in conflict-affected border communities?

In this issue of The Double Loop, we follow one leader of the Movement for Immunization Agenda 2030, Dr Tusiime Ramadhan, whose volunteer, community-based organisation is doing precisely that on the Ugandan side of the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Since Dr Tusiime joined the Movement for IA2030, his organisation has increased the number of children vaccinated each month from twenty to sixty.

This is the sixth in a series of cases following exceptional Movement for IA2030 leaders: including Wasnam Faye (Senegal), Maryam Idris (Nigeria), Franck Monga (Democratic Republic of Congo), María Monzón (Argentina), and Kingsley Nignere (Ghana).

#COP28 #ClimateCrisis and #health – through the eyes of health workers in the Global South

Samuel Chukwuemeka Obasi, a health professional from Nigeria:
“Going back home to the community where I grew up as a child, I was shocked to see that most of the rivers we used to swim and fish in have all dried up, and those that are still there have become very shallow so that you can easily walk through a river you required a boat to cross in years past.”

In July 2023, more than 1200 health workers from 68 countries shared their experiences of changes in climate and health, at a unique event designed to shed light on the realities of climate impacts on the health of the communities they serve.

Before, during and after COP28, we are sharing health workers’ observations and insights.

Follow The Geneva Learning Foundation to learn how climate change is affecting health in multiple ways:

* How extreme weather events can lead to tragic loss of life.

* How changing weather patterns are leading to crop failures and malnutrition, and forcing people to abandon their homes.

* How infectious diseases are surging as mosquitoes proliferate and water sources are contaminated.

* How climate stresses are particularly problematic for those with existing health conditions, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

* How climate impacts are having a devastating effect on mental health as people’s ways of life are destroyed.

* How climate change is changing the very fabric of society, driving displacement and social hardship that undermines health and wellbeing.

* How a volatile climate is disrupting the delivery of essential health services and people’s ability to access them.

We will finish the series with inspiring stories of how health workers are already responding to such challenges, working with communities to counter the effects of a changing climate.

On 1 December 2023, TGLF will be publishing a compendium and analysis of these 1200 contributions – On the frontline of climate change and health: A health worker eyewitness report.

This landmark report – a global first – kickstarts our campaign to ensure that health workers in the Global South are recognized as:

* The people already having to manage the impacts of climate change on health.

* An essential voice to listen to in order to understand climate impacts on health.

* A potentially critical group to work with to protect the health of communities in the face of a changing climate.

Before, during, and after COP28, we are advocating for the recognition and support of health workers as trusted advisers to communities bearing the brunt of climate change effects on health.
