Teach to Reach 7: Local health practitioners from all over the world will meet on 14 October 2022 to explore how to build back better and prepare for the next pandemic

GENEVA, 5 October 2022 (THE GENEVA LEARNING FOUNDATION) – The seventh edition of Teach to Reach on 14 October 2022 will connect over 13,000 immunization and other Primary Health care (PHC) professionals determined to “build back better”, as the COVID-19 pandemic fuels the largest continued backslide in vaccinations in three decades. 25 million infants missed out on lifesaving vaccines in 2021.

Working together, IA2030 Movement practitioners from 99 countries produced in just four months over half a million data points. Grounded in their local experience and expertise, this massive volume of information has been synthesized into practical knowledge and insights about “what works” to build back better. These constitute new community-based learning resources being used by local practitioners that could also inform country, regional, and global stakeholders.

Both recovery and future preparedness depend on the resilience of local communities, health professionals working at the local levels. We call on global partners, especially the architects of future pandemic preparedness, to take the time to listen to and learn with health professionals from the frontlines.

What works on the frontlines to build vaccine confidence?

The Geneva Learning Foundation publishes today a ground-breaking report analyzing 734 case studies developed by health professionals as part of a peer learning programme by The Geneva Learning Foundation, weeks before the introduction of COVID-19 vaccine.

This Report will be presented by its 734 Contributors at Teach to Reach: Connect 7 on 14 October 2022, as a contribution to the Movement for Immunization Agenda 2030.

Three great reasons to read this Report
1. Discover the four targeted intervention approaches that consistently resulted in improved vaccine acceptance and uptake.

2. Learn what were the two key determinants that helped change the minds and behaviors of individuals, families, and communities.

3. Find out how health professionals successfully worked with communities to overcome legacies of mistrust in marginalized communities.

Who developed this report?
734 health professionals from all levels of the health system took time out from their demanding daily duties to reflect on their practice, describing and then analyzing a situation in which they successfully helped an individual or a group accept or gain confidence that taking vaccines would protect them from disease.

Furthermore, they did this during four weeks of remote collaboration at a very crucial historical moment, months before the first doses of COVID-19 vaccine were to arrive in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

From the preface by Heidi Larson, PhD, Professor of Anthropology, Risk and Decision Science and Founding Director of the Vaccine Confidence Project at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine:
“Reading this report, I experienced a sense of discovery. The stories shared gave me renewed appreciation of these health professionals who faced even greater challenges in the face of a deadly pandemic. […] So much remains determined by the capacity of people on the frontlines to explain, advocate, and respond in ways that are almost entirely dictated by context, in this case a highly uncertain and evolving pandemic.”

Pandemic preparedness through connected transnational digital networks of local actors

At the Geneva Learning Foundation, we believe that continuous learning combined with action is the definition of preparedness.

However, trying to imagine preparedness and response to new pandemics using old, failed methods of training and capacity building – whether face-to-face or online – is both dangerous and irrational.

Read this blog post to discover how digitally-connected networks of peers can enable, support, and strengthen preparedness and response, for local outbreaks as well as for the next global pandemic:

Reinventing the path from knowledge to action in global health
At the Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF), we have just begun to share a publication like no other. It is titled Overcoming barriers to vaccine acceptance in the community: Key learning from the experiences of 734 frontline health workers.

The report documents vaccine confidence practices just weeks before the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines. It is grounded in the experience of 734 practitioners from local communities, districts, regions, and national teams, who developed case studies documenting a situation in which they were able to successfully lead individuals and groups toward better understanding and acceptance of the benefits of vaccines and vaccination.

Immunization staff from all levels of the health system became citizen scientists, active knowledge-makers drawing on their personal experience of a situation in which they successfully overcame the barriers to vaccine acceptance in the community.

The report, prefaced by Heidi Larson who leads the Vaccine Confidence Project, includes DOI to facilitate citation in academic research. (The Foundation uses a repository established and maintained by the Geneva-based CERN for this purpose.)

However, knowing that academic papers have (arguably) an average of three readers, we have a different aspiration for dissemination… Here is our plan.

Special Event: Primary Health Care & Immunization

On Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day, December 12, join immunization and Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals from health facilities, districts, and national and global teams in a special event to learn how, together, we are mutually strengthening immunization and PHC.

Learn more & request your invitation
https://www.learning.foundation/uhc

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) lifts people out of poverty, promotes the well-being of families and communities, protects against public health crises, and moves us toward Health for All.

Immunization is a critical component of primary health care (PHC) and offers a clear entry point for multisectoral efforts to strengthen PHC and UHC.

During this Special Event, the IA2030 Working Group on Strategic Priority 1 (SP1, Immunization Programmes for Primary Health Care and Universal Health Coverage) will launch the Immunization for PHC: Framework for Action that provides examples of good practices from a range of countries and practical actions that immunization and PHC professionals at all levels of the health system can take.

This Special Event is organized under the banner of the Movement for Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030).

What works in practice to build vaccine confidence?

The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF) is presenting today what we learned from local practice and expertise in a global peer learning exercise involving over 6,000 participants from 86 countries at the International Social and Behavior Change Communication Summit 2022 (#SBCCSummit) held 5-9 December 2022 in Marrakech, Morocco.

Working together in the COVID-19 Peer hub, health professionals from facilities, districts, and national teams of 86 countries developed 734 peer-reviewed case studies analyzing how they had successfully helped an individual or a group move toward vaccine acceptance – a few weeks before their focus shifted to COVID-19 vaccine introduction.

In this edition of Insights Live, we focus on what we learned during Teach to Reach: Connect 7, the world’s largest networking event for health professionals.

UNICEF was the main global partner for this edition and contributed its Interpersonal Communication (IPC) Guide, which was sent to all registered participants.

Women Who Deliver Vaccines, a self-organized collective of 143 health professionals from 38 countries, opened the event.

Learn more: https://www.learning.foundation/iwd

Topics explored at Teach to Reach 7 include:
1. Interpersonal communication: What have you changed since 2020 in how you speak with caregivers and the community about vaccines?

2. Build back better: How are you responding and what support do you need as the COVID-19 pandemic fuels the largest continued backslide in vaccinations in three decades and 25 million infants missed out on lifesaving vaccines in 2021?

3. Gender: What actions are you taking as a man to support women who work in immunization and why?

Teach to Reach 7’s overarching theme was to explore local practitioner responses to the continued “backsliding” in vaccination coverage reported by UNICEF and WHO in July 2022, beginning an exploration of what “build back better” means at the local level.

Networking and plenary sessions had a particular focus on (1) use of the TGLF Ideas Engine, a repository of advice, ideas and practices provided by participants on the TGLF learning programme; (2) interpersonal communication and use of the UNICEF guide/toolkit; and (3) use of root cause analysis to identify underlying reasons for low coverage.

Plenary sessions focused on: (1) sharing experiences in development and implementation of IA2030 Action Plans; (2) local challenges and building back better post-pandemic; and (3) the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These themes, together with three guiding questions , provided a structure for peer learning, although participants remained free to discuss whatever they found meaningful in the main event networking activity which consists of a series of individual, private meetings (“speed dating”) with one other randomly-selected participant each other.

14,134 health professionals (7,667 anglophones and 6,467 francophones) participated asynchronously, receiving and responding to event resources such as slide decks, stories, and guidance.

Over 2,400 watched the livestreamed plenary session on YouTube and other social media channels.

1240 participated in networking sessions: 759 English speakers, 418 French speakers, 53 bilinguals, and 10 global partners.

As well as the experiences shared before and during the event itself, further information was gathered in post-event feedback, which was provided by 1,024 participants, with 584 of them additionally sharing a success story, lesson learned or challenge.
