🇨🇵 The Foreign Legion is created by order of March 10, 1831 by the King of the French Louis-Philippe, at the instigation of Marshal Soult, Minister of War. It brings together, on this date, various foreign corps of the French Army, including the Swiss Guards (resulting from the Perpetual Peace signed after the Battle of Marignan, in 1516), the Swiss Regiment of the Royal Guard, and the Hohenlohe Regiment from the 2nd Regiment foreigner of the Napoleonic armies. This new troop is intended to fight outside the Kingdom (in Algeria). Originally, the Foreign Legion could only fight outside the mainland of the Kingdom; World War I will be the first exception.
It will become a legendary unit by the heroism that its soldiers will show, in particular on April 30, 1863, during the battle of Camerone, during the French expedition to Mexico.
