It took place on 27 August 479 BC near the city of Plataea in Boeotia and pitted an alliance of Greek city-states (including Sparta, Athens, Corinth and Megara) against the Persian Empire of Xerxes I.

In 480 BC, the invading Persian army led by Xerxes won several victories at Thermopylae and Artemisia and conquered Thessaly, Boeotia and Attica. However, at the battle of Salamis, the Greek coalition fleet won an unexpected victory and prevented the conquest of the Peloponnese. Xerxes withdrew with the bulk of his army, leaving his general Mardonius to continue the invasion of Greece.

In the summer of 479 BC, the Greeks assembled a powerful army and marched north. The Persians retreat to Boeotia and build a fortified camp near Plataea. The Greeks refused to advance over terrain too favourable for cavalry around the Persian camp, resulting in a stalemate over the next eleven days. With the Greek supply lines harassed by the Persians, the Greeks retreated to a better position in some disarray. Believing his opponents to be in full retreat, Mardonius ordered his troops to pursue them, but the Greeks (mainly Spartans, Tegeans and Athenians) fought and Mardonius was killed. A large part of the Persian army locked in the camp is massacred.

The destruction of this army and of the remains of the Persian fleet at the battle of Cape Mycale put an end to the invasion.
