A former Boeing employee known for raising concerns about the firm's production standards has been found dead in the US.

John Barnett had worked for Boeing for 32 years, until his retirement in 2017.

In the days before his death, he had been giving evidence in a whistleblower lawsuit against the company.

Boeing said it was saddened to hear of Mr Barnett's passing. The Charleston County coroner confirmed his death to the BBC on Monday.

It said the 62-year-old had died from a "self-inflicted" wound on 9 March and police were investigating.

Mr Barnett had worked for the US plane giant for 32 years, until his retirement in 2017 on health grounds.

58 drones of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were intercepted and destroyed over Russian regions.

Russian air defense systems last night and the morning of Wednesday, March 13, intercepted and destroyed 58 Ukrainian drones that were trying to carry out terrorist attacks on Russian territory, the Ministry of Defense reported.
The department ’s Telegram channel clarifies that 11 Ukrainian Armed Forces drones were intercepted and destroyed over the Belgorod region, eight over Bryansk, 29 over Voronezh, eight over Kursk, and one each over the Leningrad and Ryazan regions.

Earlier, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported that a Ukrainian drone detonated in a village in the Prokhorovsky district of the Belgorod region, damaging two residential buildings.

The UK Ministry of Defense's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory showed footage of tests of the DragonFire long-range laser weapon. The video was published on the laboratory’s account on the social network X (Twitter).

As reported by the American magazine Newsweek , DragonFire is supposed to be used to destroy flying targets, such as drones. According to the creators, this will save on the use of air defense missiles.

The UK Ministry of Defense conducted previous tests of laser weapons in January 2024. The complex successfully hit several air targets. The agency reported that DragonFire's range is classified.

The Ministry of Defense has calculated that the cost of one “shot” from a laser weapon is less than $13, while in ten seconds the same amount of energy is expended as in an hour of using a conventional heater.
