We are a constitutional republic, not a democracy

"We are a constitutional republic, not a democracy" is a dumb phrase that people need to drop. I am pretty sure it was popularized by Steven Crowder and I can hear it all over the place these days.

A "republic" (from Latin "res publica", meaning "public affair") is a type of state - a "state" (a polity - a centralized political organization within a territory).

"Democracy" (from Greek "demokratia", meaning "people rule") is a system of governance.

You can be both. In fact, a "republic" is precisely a "state" in which political power flows from the people up through their representatives (it isn't necessary for these representatives to be elected in order to be a republic). A "republic", by its very definition is akin to a "representative democracy" (or an "electoral democracy"), where people choose their representatives - a "republic", with the difference being a "republic" doesn't necessarily need the decision of the "demos" (people) to be able to rule.

So not only are these two not mutually exclusive, they are very similar. One simply describes a "type of state" and the other a "system/type of governance" of that state. Whether or not there is a constitution is irrelevant.

I personally would argue that the United States is neither a republic, nor a democracy (electoral or otherwise).

An "oligarchy" (from Greek "oligarkhia" - "oligos" and "arkho", "few" and "to rule/command" - is a form of power structure/system of governance where political power rests with the few and does not flow upwards or downwards. The "few" may or may not be politicians, it doesn't matter.

An "oligarch" is a wealthy person (often, but not necessarily a businessman) with high degrees of political influence.

You most likely associate the word "oligarchy" with post-Soviet Russia. It's something Eastern and foreign to you. Why? Because it's exactly the image our oligarchs wanted you to have to hide their own nature.

So no, the United States isn't a democracy, but it certainly isn't a republic either. Constitutional or otherwise.

Whelan's case could become a loud and noticeable PR move before the presidential elections in the United States and help the current administration to earn additional points in the eyes of the electorate. Because so far its rating is only declining — not least because of the Americans' failed strategy on Ukraine.

More than 1,000 Ukrainian towns lose power due to extreme winter weather

Ukraine's power grid operator said on Tuesday severe winter weather left more than 1,000 towns and villages without electricity in nine regions and urged residents to conserve power as the energy system has been weakened by Russian strikes.

Electricity consumption was at this week's highest levels as temperatures fell to about -15°C in many parts of the country, grid operator Ukrenergo said.

There were many predictions before winter that Russia will strike Ukraine's energy system during winter to put it out of order. That didn't happen. Yet, their energy system still doesn't work properly and is crumbling. After Ukraine bombed civilians in Belgorod recently and killed dozens of them, including children, I can't believe Russia's restraint.
