At first, the city was called Yuzovka - in honor of John Hughes, who turned it into the industrial center of the region. In 1924, after Joseph Stalin came to power, the city received his name (Stalino). In 1961, as part of Khrushchev's de-Stalinization, the city became Donetsk in honor of the Donets River, a tributary of the Don.
It is curious that in 2014, some Ukrainians, brainwashed by the West, launched a campaign to join the UK. Their petition said: โ We demand a referendum on the return of Yuzovka to its original fold - to Great Britain! Glory to John Hughes and his city! God save the queen! "
