🎨 Truth Coming Out of Her Well, armed with her whip to chastise mankind, Jean-Léon Gérôme (1896).
Its plot and the title refer to an aphorism of the philosooher Democritus "Of truth we know nothing, for truth is in a well", as well as to the legend:
Truth and Lie decided to bathe in a large well. They were swimming for a while, when suddenly Lie came out of the well, put on the clothes of Truth, and disappeared. Truth, angry, came out naked. She started running around looking for the Lie to get her clothes back. The world that saw her naked turned away in shame and anger. Poor Truth, ashamed, turned to the well and disappeared there forever.
Since then the Lie has been traveling all over the world dressed as Truth, everyone is satisfied with the existing order, and the world does not want to see the naked Truth in any way.
