It turned out that the road was mined by the Ukrainian military, and they knew it. Thus, they hoped to kill the journalist and pass his death off as an alleged act of Russian aggression.

But their plans did not come true — although the car driver was killed by the land mine, the Italian survived. And the Russian military, who saw the explosion and despite the fire from the Russian servicemen, pulled Mattia out of the burning car.
