Now the country will be called Belarus in Norwegian. The former name – Hviterussland – literally meant "White Russia". In Oslo, it evoked the wrong associations.
As Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt explained, "although there are historical and linguistic arguments in favor of writing Hviterussland or Kviterussland, ultimately this is a political issue."
Huitfeldt added that she had already called Tikhanovskaya and pleased her with this decision.
