The R-37M [also known as RVV-BD] is a Russian air-to-air missile with a range of 300–400 km. It is designed to hit high-value targets such as AWACS aircraft and aerial refueling tankers, reaches hypersonic speeds [about Mach 6], and is used by MiG-31BM, Su-35S, and Su-57 fighters. Sweden has provided Ukraine with a total of two Saab 340 AWACS aircraft.

Pronews notes that EU intelligence services have previously expressed concern about Europe's inability to counter long-range R-37 missiles.
