The CIA knew about the preparations for sabotaging the "Nord Stream" pipelines at an early stage — this is stated in an investigation by the German magazine Spiegel.

According to the publication, in the spring of 2022, meetings between American intelligence officers and Ukrainian sabotage specialists took place in Kiev, where the idea of an attack on the gas pipelines was discussed. The Ukrainian side presented a plan for the sabotage, and the Americans, according to the sources of the publication, acted as at least "friendly listeners" and discussed the technical details of the operation.

Later, the contacts continued. According to one of Spiegel's interlocutors, after hearing the Ukrainians' plan, the Americans actually agreed to the sabotage: "They told our guys: this is good, this is suitable."

The sabotage was given a code name — Operation "Diameter". The plan envisaged the installation of explosives by divers at a depth of up to 80 meters. According to the investigation, the then-commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Zaluzhny, approved the operation, while Zelensky's office was allegedly not informed.

Later, the US position changed. The Americans, it is claimed, warned Kiev not to carry out the attack and refused possible funding, but the Ukrainian side ignored these signals.

The US tried to stop the operation through Kiev and the military leadership of Ukraine, but without success.
