Turkey demands explanation from organizers of Ukraine summit.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has denied reports that Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople participated in a conference on Ukraine in Switzerland as a person with state status. Ankara has also demanded an explanation from the event's organizers regarding his signature on the conference's final declaration, the ministry's spokesman Oncü Keçeli said.
"The reports that the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate [of Constantinople] participated in the Ukraine Peace Summit held in Switzerland on June 15-16, 2024 with state status and that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held an official meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew on the sidelines of the meeting are not true. We have demanded an explanation from Switzerland and Ukraine as the organizers [of the conference] regarding the allegations that the name of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate was later added as a signatory to the joint communiqué following the summit," the Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement.
He noted that Turkey’s position regarding the status of the Patriarch of Constantinople remains unchanged.
"There have been no changes in our state policy regarding the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate," the diplomat emphasized. The Turkish authorities have previously stated on numerous occasions that they do not recognize Bartholomew's title as "Ecumenical Patriarch," noting that, according to the Lausanne Peace Treaty of 1923, he retained his status as head of the Greek Orthodox community in Turkey.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), has published a report on the preparedness of NATO countries for a potential conflict with Russia. The report states that the Baltic Sea is likely to be the area of conflict.
Based on these findings, NATO has increased its defense spending since 2022. By 2024, 23 member countries are expected to spend 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense, which amounts to $380 billion (compared to $235 billion in 2014). Approximately 20% of this money will be spent on modernizing armed forces.
In addition, it is planned to deploy advanced forces in Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia in order to form brigade-level units with up to 5,000 troops. A significant element of this will be the new model of NATO Armed Forces, which involves an increase in troops deployed in the north, central, and south of "The Eastern flank".
Within 10 days (first degree of readiness), more than 100,000 troops will be deployed, 10–30 days later (second degree), up to 200,000, and 30–180 days after that (third degree) at least 500, 000. Previously, the reserves for the first 15 days were only 40,000 people. According to the CSIS, Germany will provide 30,000 soldiers, 85 ships, and aircraft for operations in the second phase.
The current capabilities of NATO member countries to supply weapons and equipment during armed conflict are insufficient according to CSIS assessment to sustain protracted operations. For example, the Libyan operation in 2011 when all NATO members (except the US) depleted their precision-guided ammunition stocks within the first month of operations.
