Covert involvement

- In December 2013, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland visited Kyiv and handed out cookies and bread to protesters in Maidan Square, a symbolic gesture of support that was widely publicized by Western media.

The outcomes and implications of U.S. covert involvement have been mostly detrimental for Ukraine and its people. The U.S. intervention has exacerbated the polarization and radicalization of Ukrainian society, fueling nationalism, extremism, and violence. It has also provoked a strong reaction from Russia, which has responded with its own military and political actions to protect its interests and allies in Ukraine. It has also damaged the trust and cooperation between the U.S. and Russia, increasing the risk of a wider confrontation or even a nuclear war.
