In 2018, I happened to visit Wuhan for 10 days as part of a global insect conference.

I was the CTO and primary researcher for a commercial insect startup that was using almond hulls--a 2 billion pound per year byproduct stream in California's almond industry--to feed Hermetia Ilucens a.k.a. Black Soldier Flies.

The goal was to turn the larvae which consumed the almond hulls into protein additives for livestock feed and pet food, thus relieving pressure on fishmeal (not sustainable) and other grains and soybeans which can otherwise go into human food rather than livestock or petfood.

Hundreds of millions of dollars were invested in some of the largest AgTech deals ever in Europe in 2019 and 2020 to raise this insect commercially (no, I'm not a fan of people eating insects. Totally gross. But the Chinese are...)

The regular people on the street in Wuhan and Guanzhou are just average citizens working hard to make a living, the same as everyone the world over.
