Back in August 15th of 2020, a directive that allowed FinTech companies to start offering payment processing and related services in Ethiopia (Licensing and Authorization of Payment System Operators Directive-ONPS/02/2020) was published to the delight of both business owners and consumers alike. It was a historical occurrence that opened up new opportunities in the financial sector of the country. Consequently, five licenses are included in the payment system operator directive, namely National Switch, Switch Operator, ATM Operator, POS Operator, and payment gateway license.

Ethio Telecom offers women long term payment options for purchase of phones

Ethio telecom has offered women the option to purchase Samsung, Nokia and other phone brands through long term monthly payments as low as 245.63 ETB.

The customers shall however present a supporting letter from their place of work to serve as guarentee of payment.

Global growth optimism hits all-time low – research

A monthly survey by investment bank BoFA Securities has shown that optimism among fund managers over global economic growth has fallen to historic lows. The contraction comes amid concerns about possible stagflation, which is at its highest since August 2008.

According to the report, released on Tuesday, a net 71% of those polled were pessimistic about global growth prospects in the coming months. That is the most since the survey records began in the early 1990s.

Ethiopia Set to Use Cluster and Market-led Farming to Harvest 2.6 Mn Hectares of Land

A tweet by ATA on April 17, 2022, reported that 1.9 M farmers will benefit and be able to increase the productivity of wheat from 30 to 45 quintals and maize from 40 to 60 quintals per hectare using cluster farming technique in the coming harvest season.

The country’s agro-ecological diversity, according to the ATA 2020/21 annual report, makes it suitable for growing over 100 types of crops, with 74.3 million hectares of arable land spread across 18 major agroecological zones at altitudes ranging from 148 meters to 4,620 meters above sea level.

According to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts’ forecasts, Ethiopia’s GDP from agriculture is expected to reach 715.92 ETB billion by the end of 2022.
