📆13 января - Orthodox New Year

Orthodox New Year is annually celebrated on January 14. The Orthodox New Year is widely known as the Old New Year and is marked as January 1 in the Julian calendar, which was used before the Gregorian calendar. It is a popular holiday for those practicing the orthodox faith. During this holiday, the services are usually held with a festive dinner, music, and dancing. It is a traditional holiday where people spend time with their families. It involves serious meditation about personal New Year’s resolutions.

The Old New Year is also celebrated in the former USSR countries, Wales and Switzerland, and it is also in Montenegro, Serbia, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Japan. At the same time, its essence is the same: the New Year is simply celebrated according to the good old Julian calendar. The Old New Year appeared in our country due to a change in the chronology and is not an independent holiday. Traditionally, it is celebrated in countries where the church celebrates Christmas according to the Julian calendar, on January 7. Therefore, the date of the Old New Year comes on the night of January 13-14.

Interestingly, every 100 years the difference between the Gregorian and Julian calendars increases slightly, so starting from 2100 people will celebrate this holiday one day later. If, of course, our descendants will still celebrate this date.

Until 1918, during the future Old New Year, Vasiliev Day was celebrated — a holiday of agriculture. It was also called a "generous evening" because people were generous in everything and, most importantly, in food. Traditionally, housewives cooked wheat porridge with meat or bacon, baked pancakes and pies, and in the evening they arranged dinner together with neighbors. There was a belief that the one who would set the most magnificent table would be lucky all year.

In the Old New Year there was a tradition to make dumplings with a surprise. The whole family prepares dough and stuffing during the day, and then they start modeling at the common table. Anything can be a surprise, it all depends on your imagination. Whoever gets a "happy dumpling" will be lucky all year. For example, a bean in a dumpling is for a newborn, a dumpling with sugar marks a "sweet life", and a coin means wealth and prosperity. A dumpling with dill will bring health, the thread will take you on a journey. You can put any surprise filling, just do not forget to warn guests that dumplings are not easy, so that they are extremely careful in eating the dish.

There are signs in the Old New Year. Here they are:
• do not borrow or lend money. Otherwise, you will spend a year like this.
• it is not worth celebrating a holiday only in a female company, it is believed that then he will be unhappy and lonely.
• if the sun rises high in the morning, the whole year will be happy.
• warm snowy weather, then the summer will be rainy
• there is enough money in the house on the first day, then the family will not need it during the whole New Year.
• there are a lot of pork dishes on the festive table, then the year will be profitable.

The most truthful and accurate fortune-telling falls out on the night of January 13th to 14th. Young girls in Russia that night were guessing at their betrothed, and older people were guessing at the future harvest.

Only two films were made about the Old New Year! Both are called "Old New Year". A Russian comedy based on the script by Oleg Efremov, in which two families celebrate the holiday: a wealthy one, by Soviet standards, and hard workers. They are going to meet... The second film was shot in 2011 (USA). Its heroes are New Yorkers. On the eve of the New Year, the lives of several heroes are intertwined: an elderly man dying in a hospital, a secretary who decided to fulfill her promises, a producer of the famous New Year's show in Times Square and a man who generally hates this holiday.

📆16 января – Ice Maker's Day

Representatives of this profession pour ice on ice rinks, ice arenas and circuses, ensuring the smoothness of the rink, and this is not only the pleasure of skating and excellent quality of training, but also the safety of hockey players, skaters and figure skaters.

The day of January 16 is not only a suitable day of winter, when most people visit ice rinks and ice arenas, but also the birthday of Frank Zamboni, who was an American engineer and inventor of the resurfacer – a special machine that levels and restores ice on ice rinks.

Before the advent of this device, the ice was leveled and rolled out manually, such work was not easy, and besides, the ideal surface quality of the rink had to be achieved for a long time and painstakingly.

The need to move on the surface of frozen reservoirs arose in ancient times. Archetypes of modern blades made from the bones of domestic animals are found by archaeologists throughout northern Europe – in Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, as well as England. It is believed that people invented skates in the Bronze Age, around the beginning of the first millennium.

In ancient China, pieces of bamboo were used to move on ice, in Siberia - walrus tusks.

The oldest find was made in 1967 near Odessa. Scientists believe that the skates found could belong to the Cimmerians, a nomadic people who lived on the territory of modern Crimea, the Azov Sea and the Caucasus more than 3,000 years ago. It was impossible to move on such "skates" without additional support, so people used poles with sharp tips that pushed off from the surface of the ice. This technique resembled skiing.

For the first time skating is mentioned by the Canterbury Monk Stephanius in his book "Chronicles of the noble City of London", which dates back to the XII century.

In the XIII century, the Dutch came up with a more modern model of skates with metal knives - prototypes of modern blades. Such skates were attached to shoes with leather belts or ropes.
Skating was very developed in Holland, and was considered entertainment not so much for the nobility (as, for example, in England), but also for the common people. With the onset of winter, when reservoirs were covered with a thick layer of ice, thousands of people tied this simple device to their shoes and went for a ride.

Peter I, who visited Holland, liked the overseas fun. It is believed that it was he who came up with the idea of nailing blades directly to shoes. He brought Dutch fun to Russia. After returning to his homeland, the tsar ordered to establish the production of skates in Tula. Russian masters very often decorated the runners with figurines of horses so that they "carried" their owners over the ice. So the Russian name "коньки" appeared.

Skating affects our body

Figure. An hour of active skiing burns about 400 kcal.

Bones. The bone density increases while you are skating on the rink because the muscles of the legs, arms and body are involved.

The spine. You train the muscles, improve posture because you need to skate with a straight back.

Heart and blood vessels. Just 30 minutes on ice every day is enough to significantly reduce the risk of a heart attack in the future.

Brain. Skating gives a lot of positive emotions and helps to relieve psychological stress. It is especially useful to ride on outdoor ice rinks, a slight frost tones up the nervous system.

Vestibular apparatus. The blade of the skates is an unstable support. When we try to stand on it and move, the ability to keep balance is trained, movements become more coordinated, precise, harmonious not only on the ice, but also in everyday life.

One guy in 1972 wrote a letter to John Lennon asking him to send him money for a trip around the world.

The great musician replied to him: "Do meditation, and you will be able to see the whole world in your imagination."

In 1995, this guy still went on a trip around the world. He received the money by auctioning Lennon's letter.

It is Franklin who owns the famous aphorism "Time is money".

The scientist died on April 17, 1790 in Philadelphia. About 20 thousand people came to the farewell ceremony – despite the fact that at that time 33 thousand lived in the city.

📆 20 января - Take a Walk Outdoors Day

👟Despite the rise of various workout regimes and health practices, walking remains the most popular form of exercise in the U.S.

👟 Walking on a rough outdoor surface requires 50% more energy than walking on a paved street.

👟 Walking makes the blood flow to the brain which in turn improves your mood.

👟 Jean Beliveau traveled to 64 countries by foot — 46,600 miles — which took him 11 years.

👟 To burn off a plain M&M candy, you’ll have to walk the entire length of a football field.

The Romans came up with the concept of a mile by walking. In their estimation, a thousand military steps were equivalent to a mile. Through the ages, long-distance walking developed into a competitive sport as humans liked to exhibit their outstanding feats of achievement. In the latter half of the 19th century, this became a popular sport.

Today, we are familiar with various forms of walking such as race walking, speed walking, brisk walking, power walking, marathons, and so on.

If you have a daily ritual, like getting your morning coffee, reading a book, listening to music, or sipping wine, club it with a bit of walking. This way, you don’t have to find an extra slot in your busy schedule for a walk. Think about it.
