Principle 18 of 286. Census-taking, the lesser of two evils.
When the guest is an occasionally sweary comedienne, one doesn’t exactly expect the line “… And so I was baptised by Alexander Menn shortly before his assassination” to be dropped in.

Croatian Member of the European Parliament Mislav Kolakušić gives President Macron some tips for France’s newly-commenced rotating presidency of the Council of the EU (the body set up to represent member states’ governments).

On-message police like calling themselves “Crown servants“ lately to suggest that they are a cut above civil servants and have no duty to serve the public.
They enjoy being called “officers” and dubbing the plebs “civilians”.
They don’t like being reminded that they are constables, not least because that proper title indicates that they have their powers and duties in trust from the people locally, not from the Crown.

No Bible study today, as my fellow deacon has fallen ill and I have to take the service for him tomorrow.

In lieu of a Bible study by me today, I heartily recommend this sermon by a guest invited to address the congregation pastored by Matthew Trewhella in Michigan, whose book I recommended last week. It’s a continuation of our theme last week, of where Christian obedience to government ends.
Thanks to Nathan for the tip.

Mike Robinson would be very glad of more stable, competent, experienced, well-educated people to assist UK Column as:
- Editors of articles (correcting grammar and punctuation; improving vocabulary and clarity; optimising layout and presentation of text and argument; rewording sentences that could get us mocked or sued; adding suitable hyperlinks to reinforcing material, preferably by UK Column or other reliable publishers)
- Moderators of discussion threads on the increasingly busy UK Column Community forums for logged-in subscribers (this is, if anything, even a more difficult judgement call: how much do you let people vent?)
If you have someone in mind who you are sure is suitable, please don't reply here but e-mail alex@ukcolumn.org. Thank you.
UK Column work is paid.

‘Because it’s a joint resolution, it does not need Gov. Spencer Cox’s signature to become law, and Cox does not have the power to veto it. The Utah Legislature gave itself the ability to overturn local health orders by joint resolution in SB195, also known as Utah’s COVID-19 “endgame” bill, which was signed into law last year.’

Anglo-Saxon societies began tolerating this when they had new curricula imposed over the past decade that majored on producing “resilient” six-year-olds. In the Common Core variant (USA), it transpired that this meant “training them to cope with the distress of senseless tasks”.

The phrase “children are resilient” implies that the speaker knows they are harming kids, but hopes somewhere in the future they will recover. It’s never right to hurt a child.
