Alex Thompson, drawing on his time in GCHQ Cheltenham, quotes others writing about the emergence of the Deep State.
Having previously practised selectively on the “deadbeat” of society, the welfare state was now being used to beat the law-abiding population.
The whole 42 minute talk is highly recommended. There are numerous upsetting gems which tell us a lot about how malign objectives are pursued surreptitiously.
Alex is a special kind of person. I also recommend his recent conversation with James Delingpole (though that episode may currently be paywalled. If so, James generally lifts that quite quickly).

There were quite a few blokes like this around when @StephenMoss_TV and I joined the BBC in 1982. And some similar women too to be fair.
