Principle 17 of 286. Taxation destined for the top level of government (to be sent on a state-by-state basis) must be proportionate to population, not to the land value of a given state. There has to be scope for local variation here to avoid tax rebellions, since economic conditions vary so greatly from place to place.
Now we find out how the East German useful drones’ slogan Solches Benehmen dient nur dem Klassenfeind is expressed by an equivalent character in Ireland.

Christians are often told off by their own kind for “undermining confidence in our God-given government” if they express sentiments such as those uttered by a decent secular commentator below.

I have never once heard an acknowledgement from such régime-compliant Christians of the distinctions within their favoured, deliberately vague, term, “the authorities”. Unlike the Apostle Paul, with his exact political terminology, such Christian carpers maintain no difference between the Crown/Presidency, ministers of the Crown/executive, government officers, and government-appointed advisors.

With each step downwards in that list, we are one remove further from the oath made to the people before God to govern them lawfully. How, then, can the identical type of lawful obedience to a public health advisor be enjoined that is proper to a monarch or president?

Milton Keynes independent undertaker John O’Looney describes with great lucidity what he previously set out in a written post after his discharge from hospital:

- how he was berated, while struggling to breathe in the ambulance, for the “selfishness” of being unjabbed;

- how insistently researchers appeared at his bedside to foist experimental antivirals on him; and

- how it took hours, and involved threats of “arrest as a health hazard”, to discharge himself.

Principle 18 of 286. Census-taking, the lesser of two evils.
When the guest is an occasionally sweary comedienne, one doesn’t exactly expect the line “… And so I was baptised by Alexander Menn shortly before his assassination” to be dropped in.
But then again, it’s the Delingpod.

Croatian Member of the European Parliament Mislav Kolakušić gives President Macron some tips for France’s newly-commenced rotating presidency of the Council of the EU (the body set up to represent member states’ governments).
Kolakušić is a former judge and is able to speak like this because he’s an Independent.

On-message police like calling themselves “Crown servants“ lately to suggest that they are a cut above civil servants and have no duty to serve the public.
They enjoy being called “officers” and dubbing the plebs “civilians”.
They don’t like being reminded that they are constables, not least because that proper title indicates that they have their powers and duties in trust from the people locally, not from the Crown.

No Bible study today, as my fellow deacon has fallen ill and I have to take the service for him tomorrow.

In lieu of a Bible study by me today, I heartily recommend this sermon by a guest invited to address the congregation pastored by Matthew Trewhella in Michigan, whose book I recommended last week. It’s a continuation of our theme last week, of where Christian obedience to government ends.
Thanks to Nathan for the tip.

Mike Robinson would be very glad of more stable, competent, experienced, well-educated people to assist UK Column as:

- Editors of articles (correcting grammar and punctuation; improving vocabulary and clarity; optimising layout and presentation of text and argument; rewording sentences that could get us mocked or sued; adding suitable hyperlinks to reinforcing material, preferably by UK Column or other reliable publishers)

- Moderators of discussion threads on the increasingly busy UK Column Community forums for logged-in subscribers (this is, if anything, even a more difficult judgement call: how much do you let people vent?)

If you have someone in mind who you are sure is suitable, please don't reply here but e-mail alex@ukcolumn.org. Thank you.

UK Column work is paid.
