They too are dominated by “charismatic preachers, innovative publicists, and media-savvy publishers.” Like [historian of American Protestantism, Mark] Noll himself, who could probably be classified as belonging to this group, they also frequently give off the appearance of being in thrall to secular ideological systems. Just as the religious right too often baptizes Republican party positions, this group too often repackages secular ideological systems on topics like race in Christian wrapping paper.”

“Here’s the rub: Within Christian circles, particularly those of the leadership class and its associated institutions, the desire to appease religion’s cultured despisers has become a powerful force. Like Schleiermacher, those who hold to this vision think that a winning strategy involves standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the despisers. This no longer means conformity to the canons of academic discourse, the well-­considered position advanced by Noll and Marsden. It means echoing woke outrage.
