Did you know that World Animal Day is celebrated each year on October 4? Globally, it was celebrated for the 90th time and in Ethiopia, it was celebrated for the seventh time to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare practices.

From Elnet Foundation we are glad to contribute to this important topic by the production of a 10 minute short documentary video which focuses on the status of working animal initiatives by different stakeholders, including the government and NGOs working in the country. The short video highlights the general welfare practices of working animals and the basics of animal freedoms in Addis Ababa and its surrounding areas.

The collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, in particular the Directorate for Livestock Identification, Traceability and Animal Welfare has enabled us to produce this short documentary. We are hopeful this video will be used widely to highlight the plight and best practices for these important animals!

Happy One Health Day from Borana breeding and genetic improvement center; something to reflect about the day—One Health is both a call to action and a method. It involves breaking down the silos between the animal health, environmental health, and human health sectors so that we can track diseases wherever they are found and help prevent and quickly respond to outbreaks. More to bring you about Borana breeding and genetic improvement.

The BeWildAid presented the first draft of the course, during the presentation Dr. Jorge explained well the overall objective and vision of the course to connect in the ever emerging wildlife sector.

The Ethiopian Veterinary Association has promised to continually support the plan to collaborate and work to promote BeWildAid initiatives in Ethiopia from conducting/facilitating the online trainings with different Universities, to linking with its members and also to engage with all One Health stakeholders.

The EVA also appreciates the initiative by the BeWildAid and ready to commit to arrange different meetings with the Veterinary college. Over all, the introduction of this course will give the motivation to our Veterinary colleges.

Responding to emergency issues is one of the thematic areas that Elnet Foundation acts on based on availability of funds and the circumstances surrounding the situation. Elnet Foundation has responded to the ongoing drought in Borena, Oromia region, by supporting concentrate feed for animals and wheat for human beings. The Borena emergency support is made in collaboration with El Auto Engineering and Trading PLC.

This short video will give you the overall brief of what we did in Borena Zone during this emergency support. While staying at Yabelo, we have conducted bi-lateral meetings with Borena Zone Livestock Resource Development head and we have also managed to visit the Borena Zone Genetic and Breeding Center around 17 km from Yabelo. In addition we have seen different species of Borena cattle breeds and other wild animals in the ranch on which we have discussed lot of issues to be addressed. This has given solid information for which development interventions we can embark on in the future.

This is a true story in Ethiopia, to find so many abandoned and neglected equines in many streets of the growing city. The donkey in the video is the one from those neglected equines in Addis Ababa that has suffered for many months. As you can see the hard working donkey is now on the street with no one to take care of him. It is very sad to see the hard working is neglected with a minor health problem with no one to look for him after many year of service to many of the community where there life is dependent on it.

The problems to such conditions are many - from lack of nearby private or government owned veterinary clinic to help such neglected equines which is directly related with the concern given to the animal health sector. The second could be the affordability of the veterinary service given by the mobile vets in the city and the third and the most pressing one is the availability of essential veterinary facilities and drugs to treat equines.

Beside the problem in his leg this donkey is fine. With the help of the remaining and functional legs he is moving here and there to find feed to survive. The problem on his front left limb is now showing a good progress with good wound coverage and a good scar formation. It is with this ground gap and similar problems in equine health that makes Elnet Foundation to bring a huge project in the city to advance the veterinary service with a high quality mobile veterinary clinic that is going to be launched in the coming months. We strongly believe the mobile veterinary clinic reach such abandoned equines in need of affordable and nearby health service.

Congratulations all!

Today we’re very happy to announce that Elnet Foundation and Brooke Ethiopia signed a 15million ETB project agreement on a project entitled “Protect and Improve the Welfare of Equines in Addis Ababa Administration”. The project combines a new way of problem solving by combining treatment and euthanasia for equine in Addis Ababa through a state-of-the-art mobile veterinary clinic, community education and mobilization of key stakeholders. The implementation of the project will start this month.

Elnet Foundation’s animal welfare program is one of our domains that is working for care and protection of our animals in Ethiopia. This initiative is one of the projects that is carefully designed to solve the long lasting equine’s health and environment problems in Addis Ababa, with the potential to be replicated in other urban areas.

Please see a short video of our joint project and other works undertaken by Brooke Ethiopia on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P-V6oaabik&t=460s

On this day we want to highlight the Bishoftu school feeding program,

The Bishoftu school feeding program is one of the Elnet Foundation projects under the “Bishoftu Integrated Children and Women Empowerment Project (BICWEP)’’, a five-year project, with a 75 million budget, and it was launched on January 12, 2022, and it is implemented by our trusted partner Gudina Tumsa Foundation (GTF). The school feeding program is a component that serves breakfast and lunch for 200 primary school students; a component that has already been started as the school year began.

Archived results of the school feeding,

Beginning from the start of the school year in 2021 the project has been providing two meals a day for more 435 students. This activity continued successfully throughout the reporting quarter. In addition, to support the school feeding program and provide educational opportunities, the project started vegetable gardening (tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots) on a small plot of land provided by the beneficiary school. To find out the change that the school feeding program is bringing on the health status of the students, anthropometric measurement was taken at the end of the school year. This data indicates that there is a significant improvement in the status of the children included in the feeding program.

Environmental Protection is one of the Domains in which Elnet Foundation intervenes. One way of addressing this issue at the fundamental level is to raise a generation that takes care of its environment and treasure the nature. In aiming to achieve this, we are working with strengthening environmental club at elementary school so that they engage in tree planting, in addition to their regular cleaning campaign at their compound. Furthermore, we are engaging in delivering trainings. Today we were at one of our target schools, Bore Galan environmental club, to continue as ongoing awareness creation of tackling environment related issues in our city. Join the cause!

Ethiopia commemorated the 12th National Rabies Day,

As Ethiopia commemorates World Rabies Day for the 17th time globally and for the 12th time nationally – our Foundation is one of the technical organizing committees represented by Dr. Yimesgen Tarekegn - our animal welfare coordinator joining Rabies actors in the National Rabies Technical Working Groups with our active engagement in the National One Health Steering Committee.

Rabies is one of the top priority zoonotic diseases that Ethiopia is working on – this is why we at Elnet Foundation are very much interested in joining the national effort. So, as Ethiopia says #EndRabiesby2030 we are very much committed to keeping our engagement with the National One Health Steering Committee, and we will keep our contribution to partner and collaborate with actors in the system.

Helping our neglected working animals of Addis Ababa

Elnet Foundation strives to serve the neglected and forgotten segments of society, that other actors may not have intervened in much in the past. One such group are the working equines of our capital city of Ethiopia.

Equines serving Addis Ababa city communities through performing different activities play a great role in city’s daily activities and for their owner’s livelihood. Gharry and cart-pulling horses and donkeys are used to transport people and all kinds of goods, including farm products, firewood, water, construction materials (stones, sand, and wood), etc.

Many of these animals demonstrate severe animal welfare issues and low body scores, protracted or incurable disease, injury, or incapacity associated with abandonment or unintended neglect compared with rural equines.

At Elnet Foundation we’re starting to see the fruits of our animal welfare project, with our Mobile Veterinary Clinic, which is serving equines - horses, donkeys and mules - and their owners in Addis Ababa through treatment and euthanasia services. This alleviates the severe pain and suffering of abandoned equines which are too sick to be treated, and it ensures the livelihood of equine owners can continue as their working animal gets high quality veterinary treatment.

This project is jointly funded by Elnet Group through Elnet Foundation and by Brooke Ethiopia
