Strengthening the Backbone of Ethiopia’s Economy: The National Coffee Platform

Ethiopia is taking a bold step toward transforming its coffee sector! The National Coffee Platform recently convened a high-level meeting, bringing together key stakeholders to align visions and tackle the challenges facing our "green gold."
Her Excellency Semerita Sewasew, State Minister of Finance, on her introductory remark said that, coffee is rooted in Ethiopia’s identity. She noted that recent reforms led by the ECTA are already paying off, reflected in growing export volumes and revenues.
State Minister Semerita underlined that global and domestic challenges can only be solved through joint problem-solving and shared perspectives. According to her, this plat form therefore provides a space to come together, share perspectives, solve problems jointly and align our efforts.
His Excellency Dr. Adugna Debela, Director General of the ECTA, in his part emphasizing that this platform is designed to bring every stakeholder to the table. He cited the success of Colombia’s platform as a roadmap for moving the Ethiopian sector forward. H.E Dr. Adugna highlighted the impressive foreign currency earnings from coffee exports over the past year, noting that the platform will be the engine for further transformation.
The meeting saw a powerful gathering of leaders committed to change, including:
• H.E. Semerita Sewasew (State Minister, Ministry of Finance)
• H.E. Dr. Adugna Debela (Director General, ECTA)
• H.E. Dr. Samuel Doe (UNDP Resident Representative to Ethiopia)
• Representatives from development partners, private sector leaders, and both governmental and non-governmental institutions.
