What most kids & families are missing out on, by choosing conventional schooling vs. self-directed homeschooling:

~

* Optimal Health & Wellbeing - which comes from honoring the body's natural bio-rhythms. E.g. Sleeping, waking, eating, pooping, peeing. Movement. Stillness.

* Opportunity to cultivate Body Awareness and Inner Awareness.

* Freedom to learn what truly matters in life.

* Freedom to explore our unique gifts, joys and passions.

* Freedom to learn by taking classes ala carte as interest dictates. To learn enthusiastically because we are intrinsically motivated and interested. (because it is not forced or coerced.)

* Self-directed learning --> cultivating self-responsibility for your own life.

* Freedom to show up authentically as your very best self. Living a life that's in alignment with your priorities & values.

* The ability to design each and every day with conscious intention. Listening within for inner guidance.

* Space to daydream. To experience magic and wonderment.

* Space to "channel" fresh new ideas, creativity and inspiration.

* Space to explore intuitive awareness, energy awareness. To go far beyond so-called "mindfulness".

* Opportunity to cultivate responsibility & discipline based on internal motivations, not extrinsic rewards & punishments.

* Time with family and loved ones. Time in nature. Time at the beach. Time at the park. Time at the farmer's market. Field trips any day.

* Time to cook, time to share meals, time to garden, play and have fun. To enjoy the ideal balance between structure and spontaneity that works for your family.

* The freedom to be in joy, in the flow of synchronicities.

* When learning, the flexibility to go as fast/slow as we want. To dive deep into a subject until fully satisfied.

* Nurturing social skills in mixed-age environments.

* To be engaged in community, in life. To observe how life truly works.

What do you think?

What do we miss out on, when kids are in a school building Mon-Fri, nine months out of the year...?

I so appreciate the grounded, intelligent, and level-headed perspectives of Kevin Corbett, PhD. I think you might too. Enjoy. πŸ”¬πŸ‘

Natural learners ("unschoolers") naturally learn to read without force, without coercion.

It happens in widely diverse age ranges from 2.5 to 16!

Age 9 is most common.

On this journey, I've yet to hear of a unschooler that didn't learn to read.

The question is- what happens when our society pressures kids to read at age 5-6, when nature meant for them to do it at age 9?

What about the natural diversity that was meant to be there?

When we artificially distort the child's innate natural timing, what might we be missing out on?

Check out this study:
https://unboundedocean.wordpress.com/2018/08/31/reading-age-in-unschooled-kids-2018-update/

Results:
The data currently stand at 109 children included in the result. The mean reading age is 8.7 years, the median and mode are 9 years old.
The data follow a normal distribution when plotted as probability against age (Figure 1). The extreme ends of the distribution are 2.5 years old and 16 years old.

Based on the raw data, approximately 44% of children learnt to read before the age of 9, nearly 50% learnt to read between 9 and 12 years, and almost 7% learnt to read after the age of 12.
