What Could Soon Be Allowed on Australian Berries?
Australia is considering a major increase in the permitted residue levels of the insecticide isocycloseram on berries.
And by major, I mean very major:
🍓 Low-growing berries such as strawberries:
from 0.01 to 0.7 mg per kilogram — 70 times higher
🫐 Bush berries such as blueberries:
from 0.01 to 3 mg per kilogram — 300 times higher
🫐 Cane berries such as raspberries and blackberries:
from 0.01 to 5 mg per kilogram — 500 times higher
Why do they want to do this?
Isocycloseram is an insecticide used against pests such as thrips and mites. When farmers use it on berries according to the proposed directions, more residue may remain on the fruit than the current legal limit allows.
So instead of keeping the residue within the existing limit, the proposal is to raise the legal limit so the treated berries can still be sold.
That alone is worth paying attention to.
And now we come to the part that concerns me personally.
In official animal studies involving isocycloseram, rats showed effects including damage to testicular tissue. In one 13-week feeding study, reduced sperm counts were observed. Other studies reported liver changes and, at the highest tested dose, skeletal abnormalities in two rat foetuses.
To be fair, the studies did not show infertility at every dose. Multi-generation studies also did not find effects on mating, conception or the development of offspring.
Australian regulators therefore argue that the expected human exposure would remain below their calculated safety limits.
But “within the legal limit” does not automatically mean:
I want to eat it.
Humans are not creatures from another planet. We are biological beings too. When a chemical shows effects on testicles, sperm or unborn animals in laboratory studies, I believe it is perfectly reasonable to be cautious especially when we are talking about foods that are often eaten raw and are frequently given to children.
At this stage, the higher residue limits are still a proposal. The public submission period ended on 14 July 2026, and I will be watching closely to see what happens next.
Should these new limits be introduced, I personally will stop buying conventionally grown strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and other affected berries.
For me, it will then be certified organic berries , or no berries at all.
Our greatest power is still our wallet.
Nobody can force us to support products or farming practices we do not agree with. Producers and supermarkets tend to notice very quickly when customers stop buying.
I hope Australians will look into this and make their own informed decisions.
And for anyone outside Australia: check whether isocycloseram is used in your country and what residue levels are legally permitted on food.
Do not panic. Do not believe everything blindly.
But pay attention, ask questions, and choose carefully.
Because at some point, enough is enough.

I’ve never set myself up as an expert on what to do to sidestep the coming attempt to install a totalitarian control system & neither am I a financial planning expert.
It’s possible that in the long run, it won’t make a great deal of difference what you do. However, it has also been pointed out that “In the long run, we are all dead”.
I don’t think planning and taking what spear to be reasonable preparatory steps are useless. In order to avoid being easily pushed into whatever scheme the puppet politicians tell us to do, having some alternative way to sustain yourself and your family are obviously worthwhile, even if all you’re doing is buying a little time.
I just stumbled upon Parallel Mike’s “345 plan”, which strikes me as potentially in reach of many middle aged people. By no means complete as preparation, it’s very unlikely to turn out to have been a bad move.
It’s up to you.
