RT @SRjudgeslawyers: The sanctions announced yesterday by the US Government against four independent judges of the International Criminal Court constitute an escalation in a series of attacks by the US Government against this global judicial institution, which was created to end impunity for the worst crimes. These sanctions target four women judges, from Benin, Peru, Slovenia and Uganda, on the basis of their judicial role in the situations in Afghanistan or in the State of Palestine.

It is shocking to see a country that has for decades championed the rule of law, using a tool usually reserved for corrupt or criminal actors against judges of this global judicial body.

It is the duty of all Governments to respect and observe the independence of the judiciary.

In light of recent US sanctions targeting the ICC, Belgium, together with Slovenia, will call for the European Union’s blocking statute to be invoked.

While this would be the first time the blocking statute is applied in defense of the ICC, Belgium believes it is essential to protect the Court’s independence and its crucial role in delivering justice for the gravest crimes.

Standing with the ICC means standing with the rule of law. Belgium will remain a steadfast supporter of the Court and its mission.
