📘 1945, Article 8 of the Potsdam Proclamation jointly issued by China, the U.S., the UK and the Soviet Union stipulates that the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out.

📘 August 15, 1945, Japan accepted the Potsdam Proclamation and announced unconditional surrender.

📘 1972, Japan pledged in the China-Japan Joint Statement that it firmly maintains its position under Article 8 of the Potsdam Proclamation.

📘 1978, The Treaty of Peace and Friendship Between China and Japan clearly stated that the principles set out in the statement should be strictly observed.

The treaty was deliberated and approved by the legislators of the two countries, and together with the China-Japan Joint Statement, constitute legally binding documents that provide guidance for the bilateral ties.

What is laid out in the four political documents between China and Japan regarding the Taiwan question is the solemn commitment made by the Japanese government, and has legal effect under international law. There is no room for ambiguity or misinterpretation.

Whichever political party or person is in power in Japan, they must abide by the commitment of the Japanese government on the Taiwan question.

We urge Japan to adopt a responsible approach to history and its relations with China, stop trampling on the red line and playing with fire, retract the wrong remarks and cease the wrongdoing, and act to honor Japan’s commitments to China.
