After today’s Executive Order changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, President Trump jokes that he will next change the name of the Atlantic and/or Pacific Ocean to the America Ocean.

While speaking in the Oval Office to reporters today, U.S. President Donald J. Trump told reporters that he currently has no interest in talking to Iran, harped on the damage done to their forces, and doubled down on the effectiveness of the new “Economic D-Day” sanctions packages recently announced by the U.S. Treasury. The administration has shifted from a kinetic approach to significantly upscaled economic coercive measures in recent weeks, as efforts at diplomacy repeatedly failed to rectify the primary point of contention between Iran and the U.S., the administration of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski, in contrast to the previous government’s views on the issue, Poland is not interested in hosting U.S. nuclear weapons on Polish soil. Per Minister Zalewski, “We want to participate in NATO nuclear deterrence, does not mean to have a nuclear warhead on our territory.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, citing both U.S. and European officials briefed on the matter, U.S. President Donald J. Trump sent CIA Director John Ratcliffe personally to Russia to convey key messages and warnings, keeping even key administration officials and aides in the dark on the matter. Per the report Ratcliffe urged Russia to limit and/or end its ties with Iran, who the U.S. has step up up economic coercive measures against, assured his Russian counterparts of NATO’s commitments, and urged them to reenter, albeit far more seriously than they have in the past, peace talks to end the war with Ukraine.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has released a new video update from Adm. Brad Cooper, announcing that U.S. forces have cleared an international shipping channel of mines and declared the Strait of Hormuz open.
According to Cooper, U.S. forces have assisted more than 1,500 vessels through the Strait over the past several months, carrying more than 750 million barrels of oil.
The announcement comes as commercial traffic through the Strait remains well below prewar levels and amid continued concerns over remaining Iranian mines and threats to shipping. U.S. allies have privately assessed that not all mines may have been cleared, while the International Maritime Organization continues to advise vessels to exercise maximum caution.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary report into the loss of separation incident involving a U.S. Marine Corps VH-3D operating as Marine One and a passenger aircraft departing Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) on August 4.

The incident occurred as Marine One departed the temporary landing zone at the Ellipse, carrying President Donald J. Trump to Joint Base Andrews for his flight to the West Coast.

According to the preliminary report, Marine One twice attempted to contact DCA Tower, advising controllers that the helicopter was approximately three minutes from liftoff. The calls appear to have been intended to give air traffic control advance notice so departing traffic could be stopped or otherwise managed as necessary.

Approximately three minutes after the initial notification, Marine One contacted the tower again, advising that it was proceeding as briefed. The controller then advised the helicopter of departing traffic and instructed the aircraft to go around, climb and turn away from the traffic.

Two LaGuardia air traffic controllers reportedly left work early on the night an Air Canada Express flight collided with an airport fire truck in March, killing both pilots and injuring dozens of people.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, the controllers’ departures were significant enough that the FAA is considering disciplinary action. Both are currently on leave and are not controlling air traffic.

The NTSB is still investigating the crash, and its final report and determination of probable cause are not expected for roughly another six months.

The controllers’ union, NATCA, has not confirmed disciplinary action but said it is discussing the allegations with FAA leadership. The FAA said it is committed to accountability and aviation safety.

According to a releases from Norwegian media outlets, the foreign ministry, and the royal household, Norwegian King Harald V has died after 35 years as king.

Five general aviation aircraft violated the Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over Houston on today while President Trump was in town.

U.S. Air Force F-16s on combat air patrol for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted all five aircraft and safely escorted them out of the restricted airspace.

The TFR was established for the president's visit and covered a 30 nautical mile area around Houston, with tighter restrictions within 10 nautical miles. The inner restriction prohibited general aviation operations at Hobby, Ellington and La Porte during a 10 a.m.–2 p.m. window today for general aviation.

NORAD says the number of recent TFR violations in Texas is concerning and reminded pilots that checking active NOTAMs before flight is essential.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order today, to create an academy for the newest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Space Force.

Despite current assessments that the likelihood of a Russian direct action against a NATO nation, specifically the Baltic nations, is low, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski rightly noted this morning that Russian President Vladimir Putin had promised his foreign counterparts in the past that he would not invade Ukraine and did anyway. Minister Sikorski added that defense revitalization must be “accelerated” as a result of Putin’s last broken promises.

Five F-35A Lightning lls landed today at the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Łask, Poland, joining three other “Husarz” with the Polish Air Force’s 2nd Tactical Air Wing, marking a total of eight F-35s that have been delivered so far by the American defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

Federal authorities are preparing potential charges against a U.S. servicemember accused of making more than $1 million in profits from Polymarket bets tied to military operations, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The servicemember, who has been under scrutiny since the spring, allegedly made successful bets involving the timing or outcomes of U.S. military strikes in Iran and Venezuela. The case is part of a broader federal investigation into whether military personnel used confidential information to trade prediction-market contracts.

A separate investigation involves a KPMG employee accused of betting on whether a public company would beat quarterly earnings expectations, potentially using nonpublic information obtained through their employment.

Charges in both cases could come this fall, although prosecutors have not made final decisions. The investigations involve the Justice Department, federal prosecutors in Manhattan and Washington, and the CFTC.

The cases are part of a broader effort to determine how existing insider-trading and financial-fraud laws apply to prediction markets such as Polymarket. Previous prosecutions involving alleged insider trading on the platform are already facing challenges over whether those laws apply to prediction-market contracts.

Notably, the servicemember has not been charged at this point. The allegations remain under investigation.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is considering bringing hundreds of senior military leaders back to Marine Corps Base Quantico for another address later this year, according to U.S. officials.

Hegseth held a similar meeting there last September, when he summoned generals and admirals on short notice to outline his priorities for the force. The event focused heavily on warfighting, physical and grooming standards, and reversing diversity and inclusion policies from the previous administration.

Officials say a second Quantico meeting would likely be used to outline additional priorities and issue new directives, although the date and exact attendance have not been determined. The Pentagon says it has nothing to announce at this time.

It also remains unclear whether President Trump would attend, as he did last year.

The potential meeting comes as Hegseth continues efforts to reshape military policies around physical standards, appearance and what he describes as a renewed focus on warfighting. Critics have argued that the administration's emphasis on these issues risks diverting attention from broader readiness and modernization challenges.

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov visited Washington, D.C. today where information sharing with his U.S. counterparts is expected to be at the forefront of his visit. Fedorov, who was ousted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky due to intra-governmental and defense ministry conflicts, is expected to share much of his knowledge of Ukraine’s ability to adapt to battlefield conditions by mobilizing the defense industrial base and creating flexibility within industry during a conflict characterized by large-scale conventional operations.

According to the Telegraph, citing a U.S. official, the U.S. is mulling bringing its support for the UK’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands under review if they do not meet spending requirements, specifically NATO’s 5% defense spending targets. The update comes amidst deputies between Argentinian President Javier Milei and the Trump administration and the renewed U.S. push to have NATO members states shoulder a significantly larger portion of the financial, industrial, and force posture burden within the defense treaty framework. However, as noted in the Telegraph article, the UK’s new defense spending plan falls short of their own targets, let alone those set out by NATO.

President Trump says the U.S. has secured majority control over a joint venture covering more than 65 billion barrels of proven Venezuelan oil reserves, following the administration’s effort to bring American energy companies back into Venezuela.

Under the reported arrangement, Venezuela’s interim government granted the venture a 100-year concession to operate the affected oil fields. The U.S. government would control 55% of the venture, through a combination of equity and the ability to acquire oil at cost.

The Trump administration says the arrangement could bring nearly $100 billion in private investment, increase U.S. oil supplies and eventually reduce energy prices. The administration also says the deal comes at no cost to U.S. taxpayers.

The agreement covers roughly one-fifth of Venezuela’s more than 300 billion barrels of proven reserves. Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves, but production has been constrained for years by underinvestment, deteriorating infrastructure, sanctions and the nationalization of foreign-owned assets.

The identity of the private operator involved in the joint venture has not yet been disclosed. Companies including Chevron, Repsol and Eni still have operations or interests in Venezuela, while other major oil companies remain wary after having assets nationalized under Hugo Chávez.

The deal is part of a broader U.S. effort to reopen Venezuela's oil industry to foreign investment following the January U.S. military operation that removed Nicolás Maduro and installed Delcy Rodríguez as interim president.

The Iran war is creating growing concerns about U.S. munitions inventories and the ability to respond to a major contingency involving China or Russia.

According to U.S. officials cited by the Wall Street Journal, PAC-3 Patriot interceptors and ATACMS missiles in Europe have fallen to “beyond critical” levels. Other precision weapons and guided rockets have also been drawn down, while THAAD interceptors and counter-drone systems have been moved from Europe to the Middle East.

By mid-July, U.S. forces had reportedly expended approximately 1,700 Patriot interceptors, 200 THAAD interceptors and 150 Navy Standard Missiles during the Iran conflict. Iran has launched more than 1,500 ballistic missiles and 6,000 large drones during the war.

The depletion is affecting U.S. planning. European Command has reportedly adjusted operational plans, while officials have previously acknowledged that current inventories could constrain the ability to execute contingency plans for Taiwan.

The problem is compounded by production timelines. Replenishing some advanced interceptors and missiles could take years, even as European allies face delays receiving weapons they have already purchased.

The White House and Pentagon dispute the characterization of a broader U.S. munitions shortage, saying current inventories remain sufficient to meet America's strategic objectives. NATO likewise says the alliance retains enough air-defense munitions for its defense.

According to a release from the Israel Defense Force (IDF), the IDF carried out a strike on a yet unnamed Hamas decision-maker in the Deir Al-Balah area of the Central Gaza Strip. Per the release, the commander worked to aid Hamas’ wider reconstitution efforts and aided in efforts that violated the ceasefire. Additionally, according to the IDF, the terrorist was in place near a hospital complex.

Yesterday, U.S. Marines and sailors from USS San Antonio (LPD-17) conducted the interdiction and destruction of a vessel operating in the Eastern Pacific Ocean as a floating refueling point for drug trafficking vessels of the designated terrorist entity Los Choneros. Per the release, those aboard the vessel were apprehended and taken to Ecuador. This marks the newest operation subordinate to the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C) and JTF-WHEM.
