The death toll from yesterday’s pair of major earthquakes in Northern Venezuela, measuring a 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, has risen to at least 235, according to Venezuela’s Health Ministry.

U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Jarrard, who has been tasked with leading the earthquake response effort by U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in Venezuela, met earlier today with Venezuela’s Minister of Defense Gustavo González López.

Gustavo González López, who previously served as the Director of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service, has been sanctioned over the years by a number of countries for human rights violations and undermining democracy, including by the United States in 2015.
