U.S. Army Central has published a statement announcing the death of an American Soldier during a “military training accident” with the British Army at Erbil Air Base in Northern Iraq on May 31, 2026.
Though likely a coincidence, both of the servicemember deaths announced today by the U.S. and British Army during a “training exercise” at Erbil Air Base in Northern Iraq, occurred on the same day reports emerged of Iranian attacks against American-backed Kurdish paramilitary forces in Northern Iraq.

The U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement Monday that it would abide by the ruling set forth earlier today by Federal District Judge Leonie Brinkema, who ordered a temporary halt in any payouts and/or the creation of the Trump Administration’s planned Anti-Weaponization Fund, which would have paid out millions in taxpayer funds - up to $1.8 billion - to allies of President Trump deemed to be “victims of lawfare and weaponization,” including many who stormed the U.S. Capitol of January 6, 2021.

Today’s ruling followed fierce and rare backlash against the fund by Republican lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other Senate Republicans, who threatened to team up with Democrats to block the fund and called for it to be “killed” by the Justice Department. Nearly half the Republican conference appeared ready to vote with Democrats to restrict or kill it, said Republican Senator Ted Cruz, potentially placing a serious rift before the midterms between Republicans in Congress and the White House under President Trump.

The United States is in discussions with several members of NATO, including Poland and some of the Baltic States, on whether to deploy nuclear weapons to additional sites throughout Europe, in a move intended to reassure allies that reduced conventional military support on the continent does not weaken security guarantees against Russia, three people briefed on the discussions told the Financial Times.

As part of the talks, which are said to be highly confidential, U.S. officials have signalled openness to additional deployments beyond the existing six countries hosting nuclear-capable bombers, which currently includes Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Such deployments would potentially allow more countries to host so-called U.S. Dual-Capable Aircraft (DCA), which are able to deliver nuclear strikes, such as the F-15E Strike Eagle and F-35A Lightning II.
