Statement by French President Emmanuel Macron in response to todayโ€™s threat by President Donald J. Trump of tariffs against France and other countries in Europe, over the ongoing Danish-led military exercise in the Northern Atlantic and Denmarkโ€™s refusal to sell Greenland:

โ€œFrance is committed to the sovereignty and independence of Nations, in Europe as elsewhere. This guides our choices. It underpins our attachment to the United Nations and to our Charter.

It is on this basis that we support and will continue to support Ukraine, and that we have built a coalition of the willing for a robust and lasting peace, to defend these principles and our security.

It is also on this basis that we have decided to join the exercise decided by Denmark in Greenland. We stand by this decision. Especially because it concerns security in the Arctic and at the frontiers of our Europe.

No intimidation nor threat will influence us, neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world when we are confronted with such situations.

Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. Europeans will respond to them in a united and coordinated manner if they were to be confirmed. We will know how to uphold European sovereignty.

It is in this spirit that I will speak with our European partners.โ€

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerssonโ€™s response to todayโ€™s threats of tariffs by President Donald J. Trump over Greenland:

โ€œWe will not let ourselves be blackmailed. Only Denmark and Greenland decide on issues concerning Denmark and Greenland. I will always stand up for my country, and for our allied neighbors. This is an EU issue that affects many more countries than those now being singled out. Sweden is now having intensive discussions with other EU countries, Norway, and the United Kingdom for a coordinated response.โ€

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced that its forces conducted a strike in Northwest Syria on Friday, January 16, that resulted in the death of Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, a terrorist leader affiliated with Al-Qaeda who had direct ties to the ISIS terrorist responsible for an ambush that killed two U.S. Soldiers and an American interpreter last month near Palmyra in Central Syria.

Last Wednesday morning, as it appears U.S. strikes against Iran were imminent, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sent a text message to White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, which was relayed to President Donald J. Trump and reportedly stated that Iran would stop the killing and cancel the execution of some 800 demonstrators that had been arrested during the recent round of anti-government protests, officials tell the Washington Post.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the countryโ€™s de facto leader, spoke to President Donald J. Trump by phone early last week to plead the case of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and other Arab allies, who were concerned strikes against Iran would harm regional security and the economy, ultimately impacting the United States, according to a Saudi diplomat and a U.S. official who spoke to the WaPo.

In addition to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other Gulf Nations, Israel also wasnโ€™t ready for strikes against Iran, particularly without a large supporting naval presence from the United States. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had launched a massive military and intelligence operation against Iranโ€™s nuclear and long-range missiles facilities last June, called President Donald J. Trump twice on Wednesday and asked him not to strike because Israel was not fully prepared to defend itself, a source close to the White House told the WaPo.

At the Pentagon on Wednesday, aides to senior leaders were prepared to stay late into the night in anticipation of U.S. strikes against Iran, however, at around 3:30 P.M., they got word they could go home as normal. The President will have another opportunity to sign off on strikes against Iran in the next two to three weeks, when U.S. military assets headed toward the region will be in place, helping allay Israelโ€™s concerns about its own protection, officials tell the WaPo.

Statement published by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer in response to todayโ€™s threat of tariffs from President Donald J. Trump:

โ€œOur position on Greenland is very clear โ€“ it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes.

We have also made clear that Arctic Security matters for the whole of NATO and allies should all do more together to address the threat from Russia across different parts of the Arctic.

Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of NATO allies is completely wrong. We will of course be pursuing this directly with the US administration.โ€

I am extremely doubtful of this story, the 11th doesnโ€™t make any sense for a deployment like this, they are a rapid-response force, but primarily for the Indo-Pacific and Arctic. The 82nd Airborne or 10th Mountain would make way more sense for a deployment to Minneapolis.

Overnight, following their withdrawal from the west bank of the Euphrates River, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) allegedly detonated two bridges which cross into Raqqa, in an attempt to halt the ongoing advance by the Syrian Army.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have signed a 14-point ceasefire agreement ending the recent round of heavy clashes in Northern Syria between government forces and their allies, and Kurdish-led paramilitaries and their allies, which culminated in the near total collapse of defensive lines held by the SDF and massive gains by the Syrian Army. The ceasefire agreement includes:

First: A comprehensive and immediate ceasefire on all fronts and points of contact between the Syrian government forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces, in parallel with the withdrawal of all military formations affiliated with the "SDF" to the area east of the Euphrates as a preliminary step for redeployment.

Second: Handing over the governorates of Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa administratively and militarily to the Syrian government in full immediately, including receiving all civil institutions and facilities, with the issuance of immediate decisions to confirm the current employees within the specialized ministries affiliated with the Syrian state, and the government's commitment not to harass SDF employees and fighters and the civil administration in the two governorates.

Third: Integrating all civil institutions in Al-Hasakah Governorate into the Syrian state institutions and its administrative structures.

Fourth: The Syrian government taking over all border crossings and oil and gas fields in the region, and securing their protection by the regular forces to ensure the return of resources to the Syrian state.

Fifth: Integrating all military and security elements of the "SDF" into the structure of the Syrian Ministries of Defense and Interior on an "individual" basis after conducting the necessary security vetting, while granting them military ranks and material and logistical entitlements as appropriate, while protecting the privacy of the Kurdish regions.

Sixth: The SDF leadership commits not to include remnants of the defunct regime in its ranks and to submit lists of officers of the defunct regime present in areas of Northeastern Syria.

Seventh: Issuing a presidential decree appointing a candidate to occupy the position of governor of Al-Hasakah, as a guarantee of political participation and local representation.

Eighth: Evacuating the city of "Ain al-Arab/Kobani" of heavy military presence, forming a security force from the people of the city, and maintaining a local police force administratively affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Interior.

Ninth: Merging the administration responsible for the file of ISIS prisoners and camps, in addition to the forces responsible for protecting these facilities, with the Syrian government, so that the
Syrian government assumes full legal and security responsibility for them.

Tenth: Approval of a list of nominated leaders submitted by the SDF leadership to fill senior military, security, and civil positions in the central state structure to ensure national
partnership.

Eleventh: Welcoming Presidential Decree No. 13 of 2026, which stipulates recognition of Kurdish cultural and linguistic rights, addressing the legal and civil issues of unregistered persons, and restoring property rights accumulated from previous decades.

Twelfth: The SDF commits to removing all non-Syrian leaders and elements of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) outside the borders of the Syrian Arab Republic to ensure sovereignty and stability of the neighborhood.

Thirteenth: The Syrian state is committed to continuing the fight against terrorism (ISIS) as an active member of the international coalition, with joint coordination with the United States in this framework to ensure the security and stability of the region.

Fourteenth: Working to reach understandings regarding the safe and dignified return of the people of the Afrin and Sheikh Magsoud regions to their areas.
