U.S. President Donald J. Trump and his team are discussing a range of options - including potential military force - to acquire Greenland, clearly stating that the territory is a “National Security Priority” of the United States, the White House said in a statement to Reuters.

Efforts by the Trump Administration to take control of Greenland include buying the territory or forming a compact of free association with the island, a senior official told Reuters, adding that President Trump wants the U.S. to annex Greenland during his current term in office and the issue is “not going away,” despite objections from other members of NATO.

Joint statement published today by the Leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, regarding recent statements made by President Donald J. Trump and NATO’s defense of Greenland as well as the Arctic. At the end of the statement, they close by stating, “Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”

During a closed briefing with top congressional leaders on Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio attempted to downplay increasingly belligerent statements from President Trump and the White House regarding Greenland, telling lawmakers that recent administration threats against Greenland didn’t signal an imminent invasion and that the goal is to buy the island from Denmark, people familiar with the discussions told the Wall Street Journal.

Rubio’s comments appear to be in stark contrasts to statements made recently by other senior officials in the Trump Administration, with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller advocating for military force to take the island, telling CNN during an interview last night that, “obviously, Greenland should be part of the United States.” He added, “Nobody is going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.”

The Trump Administration has warned Venezuela’s Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace Diosdado Cabello to “cooperate or face potential targeting,” sources have told Reuters.

President Donald J.
