Today’s funeral at Washington National Cathedral for Former Vice-President Dick Cheney provided a rare moment of civility between Democrats and Republicans in our current crazy world of politics and insanity, attended by both President George W. Bush and President Joe Biden, along with a bipartisan group of high-profile individuals and politicians, ranging from Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to Rachel Maddow to even Former National Security Advisor John Bolton.

The U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify the swastika - an emblem of Nazi Germany and linked to the deaths of more than 400,000 Americans who died fighting in World War ll - as a hate symbol, instead labeling it as “potentially divisive” along with the…
The U.S. Coast Guard has released an official statement and a service memorandum by Acting Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Kevin E. Lunday, titled “COAST GUARD POLICY AND LAWFUL ORDER PROHIBITING DIVISIVE OR
HATE SYMBOLS AND FLAGS” which reidentifies symbols like the swastika, noose, or “any other symbols or flags co-opted or adopted by hate-based groups as representations of supremacy, racial or religious intolerance, anti-semitism, or any other improper bias,” as hate symbols, which are prohibited and their display punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) by the U.S. Coast Guard.

This announcement and memorandum follows several articles and reports earlier today about a Commandant Instruction regarding “Harassing Behavior Prevention, Response, and Accountability” (COMDTINST 5350.6A), which was supposed to go into effect December, and appeared to downgrade symbols like the swastika and noose to “potentially divisive” instead of hate symbols, which was their previous designation under the U.S. Coast Guard Civil Rights Manual (COMDTINST M5350.4E).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a somber address to the nation this morning from outside the Presidential Office in Kyiv, reminiscent of his speech the morning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, stating that Ukraine is now facing “one of the most difficult moments in its history,” adding that Ukraine has “a very difficult choice: either loss of dignity, or the risk of losing a key partner [the United States]. Either the difficult 28-points, or an extremely difficult winter, the most difficult, and further risks. A life without freedom, without dignity, without justice, and believing someone who has already attacked us twice.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke earlier today with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who offered his condolences for this week’s Russian cruise missile strike on an apartment building in the Western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, which resulted in at least thirty-one deaths, including six children. Zelensky thanked Rutte for his continued support, while discussing diplomatic possibilities, stating that Ukraine is ready to work quickly and constructively to make peace work, coordinating the next joint steps towards the plan proposed by the United States.
