According to the New York Times, Iran coordinated the missile attack tonight on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with Qatari officials and gave advanced notice that attacks were coming to minimize casualties, according to three Iranian officials familiar with the plans. The officials said Iran symbolically needed to strike back at the U.S. but at the same time carry it out in a way that allowed all sides an exit ramp; they described it as a similar strategy to 2020 when Iran gave Iraq heads up before firing ballistic missiles at Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq following the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by President Trump.

It appears that tonight’s attack by Iran only targeted Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, with all other reports of attacks in Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia either the result of attacks from Iranian-backed militia groups or entirely false. The sirens in Bahrain and Kuwait appear to have just been precautionary.

Even if the attack failed and even if a warning was given in advance, I still don’t see President Trump “taking this one on the chin” and allowing Iran to attack a base in Qatar without significant consequences for the Iranian Armed Forces.

Bahrain has now also closed its airspace, following both Qatar and the UAE.

The Trump Administration was anticipating Tehran would retaliate after strikes by the U.S. Air Force on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, and the President does not want more military engagement in the Middle East, a senior White House official told CNN, though the official added that President Trump is willing to escalate U.S. military involvement “if necessary,” and is currently meeting with senior defense officials in the Situation Room.

The first post by U.S. President Donald J. Trump on Truth Social since the Iranian ballistic missile attack against U.S. Forces stationed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and it doesn’t even mention the attack, instead talking about issues the President has with reporting by CNN, ABC, and NBC.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condemns the ballistic missile attack tonight by Iran against Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, stating that it is a “flagrant violation of international law and the principles of good neighborliness, and an entirely unacceptable act that cannot be justified under any circumstances.” Adding that Saudi Arabia affirms its full support for Qatar.

The U.S. State Department has released an “Updated Travel Alert” now for Kuwait, stating that, “Due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, and out of an abundance of caution, the U.S. Embassy has advised its personnel to exercise increased vigilance and has instructed mission personnel to comply with temporary restrictions imposed by the U.S. military on access to Camp Arifjan, Camp Buehring, Ali Al Salem Air Base, and Camp Patriot. Access to those facilities is limited to essential personnel only at this time.”
