Qatar condemns the ballistic missile attack by Iran on U.S. Al Udeid Air Base, adding that all of the missiles were intercepted and that there are no reported injuries so far.

Some media outlets are reporting a few, possible three, ballistic missile impacts at or near U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, though so far nothing is confirmed.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council claims in a statement, that the IRGC and Army “pulverized” the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in response this weekend’s strikes against nuclear sites in Iran. It further says the number of missiles matched the number of U.S. bombs used, and claims the strike avoided civilian areas, with the wording suggesting that this will be the only military action by Iran against the United States.

Statement from the Qatari Ministry of Defense in response to the ballistic missile attack moments ago by Iran:

“The Ministry of Defense announced that Qatari air defenses successfully intercepted a missile attack targeting Al Udeid Air Base.

Thanks to God and the vigilance of the armed forces personnel and the precautionary measures taken, the incident resulted in no deaths or injuries.

The Ministry reaffirmed that the airspace and territory of the State of Qatar are safe and that the Qatari Armed Forces are always fully prepared to deal with any threat. The Ministry of Defense also advises citizens and residents to follow official sources for directives and the latest developments.”

Sirens sounding earlier in Bahrain, as residents are told to take shelter until further notice.

According to the New York Times, Iran coordinated the missile attack tonight on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with Qatari officials and gave advanced notice that attacks were coming to minimize casualties, according to three Iranian officials familiar with the plans. The officials said Iran symbolically needed to strike back at the U.S. but at the same time carry it out in a way that allowed all sides an exit ramp; they described it as a similar strategy to 2020 when Iran gave Iraq heads up before firing ballistic missiles at Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq following the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by President Trump.

It appears that tonight’s attack by Iran only targeted Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, with all other reports of attacks in Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia either the result of attacks from Iranian-backed militia groups or entirely false. The sirens in Bahrain and Kuwait appear to have just been precautionary.

Even if the attack failed and even if a warning was given in advance, I still don’t see President Trump “taking this one on the chin” and allowing Iran to attack a base in Qatar without significant consequences for the Iranian Armed Forces.

Bahrain has now also closed its airspace, following both Qatar and the UAE.

The Trump Administration was anticipating Tehran would retaliate after strikes by the U.S. Air Force on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, and the President does not want more military engagement in the Middle East, a senior White House official told CNN, though the official added that President Trump is willing to escalate U.S. military involvement “if necessary,” and is currently meeting with senior defense officials in the Situation Room.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condemns the ballistic missile attack tonight by Iran against Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, stating that it is a “flagrant violation of international law and the principles of good neighborliness, and an entirely unacceptable act that cannot be justified under any circumstances.” Adding that Saudi Arabia affirms its full support for Qatar.
